- Check for vacuum leaks.
- Check ignition system. See the BASIC TESTING - 2.5L article.
- Check engine compression. Check engine mechanical condition. Check intake manifold, manifold gasket, camshaft and valves.

- Check by-pass air control and idle air control systems. See the SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC (2.5L) article.
- Check for leaking or restricted exhaust system.
