SERVICE PROCEDURE
ECM EPROM Replacement
Some 1993 and 1994 California specification Scoupes may set a check engine light with no fault code stored. To correct this condition the EPROM must be replaced inside the Engine Control Module. Below are the instructions for replacing the EPROM in the Naturally Aspired and Turbocharged models.
Naturally Aspirated
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the Engine Control Module (ECM) from the vehicle following the instructions in the Shop Manual.
- With the bottom side up on the ECM, bend the ten tabs straight up to release the cover from the base and separate.
- Locate the EPROM. It is located under the removable white retainer. Remove the white retainer. Lift the EPROM from the socket straight up with equal pressure.
- Install the new EPROM carefully with the notch in the EPROM matching the notch in the socket. Use extreme caution not to bend the pins of the EPROM. Reinstall the white retainer.
- Place the cover over the base. Turn the ECM upside down and bend the ten tabs down to fasten the base to the cover.
- Install the ECM into the vehicle.
- Open the left door and place a punch mark over the 11th character on the B-Pillar identification plate. This will indicate that the campaign procedures have been completed. Proceed to Step 1 of the Modification Label and Proof of Correction Form instructions.
Turbocharged
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the Engine Control Module (ECM) from the vehicle following the instructions in the Shop Manual.
- With the bottom side up on the ECM, bend the ten tabs straight up to release the cover from the base and separate. Be sure to retain the plastic shield for reassembly.
- Use a pliers to remove the retaining pin, located on the bottom of the ECM.
- Grip the ECM from the back side and, using your thumb against the base, pop the two boards apart.
- Place a screwdriver under the upper board tabs as shown in Fig. Fig 6 . Pry up one side at a time until the upper board is removable from the connector. Pull the upper board rearward until the pins clear the connector and tilt the board up and back to remove the EPROM.
- Locate the EPROM. It is located under the removable white retainer on the bottom side of the upper board. Remove the white retainer. Lift the EPROM from the socket straight up with equal pressure.
- Install the new EPROM carefully with the notch in the EPROM matching the notch in the socket. Use extreme caution not to bend the pins of the EPROM. Reinstall the white retainer.
- Reposition the upper board into the connector and snap the tabs into place. Then place the plastic sheet over the top board and then the cover over the base. Turn the ECM upside down and bend the ten tabs down to fasten the base to the cover. Reinstall the retaining pin.
- Reinstall the ECM into the vehicle.
- Open the door and place a punch mark over the 11th character on the B-Pillar identification plate. This will indicate that the campaign procedures have been completed. Proceed to Step 1 of the Modification Label and Proof of Correction Form instruction Section of this TSB.
