Code 42

NOTE: Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect connector AB21 from left-side pretensioner. See Figure. Disconnect connectors AB19 and AB20. Connect connector AB20 to test harness "F" (98299FC010), connector 1F. See Figure. Connect air bag resistor (98299PA040) to test harness "F", connector 3F. Connect negative battery terminal and turn ignition on (with engine off). If AIR BAG warning light goes off after about 7 seconds and remains off for more than 30 seconds, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light does not turn off after about 7 seconds or turns back on within 30 seconds, replace left front seat assembly with side air bag module and go to step  10.
  2. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery terminal. Wait at least 20 seconds. Disconnect air bag resistor from test harness "F" connector 3F. Disconnect air bag control module connector AB17. See Figure. Connect connector AB17 to test harness "I2" (98299FC041), connector 1I. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 12 and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 4. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace left side air bag wiring harness and go to step  10.
  3. Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 10 and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 3. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace left side air bag wiring harness and go to step  10.
  4. Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminals No. 10 and 12. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace left side air bag wiring harness and go to step  10.
  5. Measure resistance between test harness "F", connector 3F, terminals No. 3 and 4. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace left side impact air bag wiring harness and go to step  10.
  6. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 3. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace left side impact air bag wiring harness and go to step  10.
  7. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 4. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace left side impact air bag wiring harness and go to step  10.
  8. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 10. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace left side impact air bag wiring harness and go to step  10.
  9. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 12. If resistance is more than one megohm, replace air bag control module and go to next step. See CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace left side impact air bag wiring harness and go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery terminal. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
