Valve Guide Replacement

Use a modified air-impact hammer attachment or Valve Guide Driver (07742-0010100) to remove and install valve guides. See Fig 1 . Chill replacement guides in a freezer for about an hour. Use a hot plate or oven to evenly heat cylinder head to 300°F (150°C).

Working from camshaft side, drive valve guide about 5/64" (2 mm) towards combustion chamber, knocking off some carbon and making removal easier. Turn cylinder head over, and drive guide out toward camshaft side. If guide does not move, drill out with 5/16" drill bit, and try again.
CAUTION: Drill guides only in extreme cases. Cylinder head damage can occur if valve guide breaks.
Remove new guides from freezer individually as you need them. Slip a 6-mm steel washer and correct driver attachment over end of driver. Install new guides from camshaft side of head. Drive guides in until attachment bottoms on head. If all 12 guides are being replaced, cylinder head may have to be reheated once or twice.
Ensure valve guide height is within specification. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Using cutting oil, ream new valve guides by rotating Valve Guide Reamer (07HAH-PJ70110A or 07HAH-PJ70110B) clockwise full length of valve guide bore. Check valve stem-to-guide oil clearance. See CYLINDER HEAD table.

NOTE: Always reface valve seat after replacing valve guide.
