Vehicle Speed Sensor

  1. Vehicle speed sensor is located on the transaxle. See Figure . Ensure No. 22 (20-amp) fuse in fuse-relay box, located behind kick panel on driver's side, is okay. If fuse is okay, disconnect 3-pin connector at vehicle speed sensor.
  2. Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between Green  /White wire of 3-pin connector and body ground. If continuity exists, proceed to step 3). If continuity does not exist, check for open circuit in Green  /White between 3-pin connector and ground connection. Ground connection is located on mounting bolt for throttle body.
NOTE: Speed sensor is grounded through the ECU to ground connection on mounting bolt for throttle body.
  3. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between Black  /Yellow  wire of 3-pin connector and body ground. If battery voltage exists, proceed to step 4). If battery voltage does not exist, repair open circuit in Black  /Yellow  wire between 3-pin connector and No. 22 (20-amp) fuse in fuse-relay box, located behind kick panel on driver's side.
  4. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between Yellow  /Red  wire of 3-pin connector and body ground. If about 5 volts exist, proceed to step 5). If about 5 volts do not exist, repair open circuit or short circuit to ground in Yellow  /Red  wire. The Yellow  /Red  wire goes to gauge assembly, PGM-FI/AT ECU, cruise control unit, climate control unit and power seat control unit.
NOTE: Cruise control unit is located behind kick panel on passenger's side. Climate control unit is located on center of instrument panel. See Figure . Power seat control unit is located below driver's seat.
  5. Reconnect 3-pin connector on vehicle speed sensor. Raise and support front of vehicle so front wheels can rotate. Using voltmeter, backprobe Yellow  /Red  wire on 3-pin connector and connect it to body ground.
  6. Place shift lever in Neutral. Ensure ignition is on. Rotate one front wheel while holding the other front wheel stationary.
  7. Note that voltage reading pulses from zero volts to about 5 volts. If voltage pulses correctly, speed sensor is okay. If voltage does not pulse correctly, replace vehicle speed sensor.
