Safety Indicator Unit
- Turn ignition on. Safety indicator lights should come on for 2 seconds. If light(s) stay on, this indicates a door or trunk lid is open. Brake lamp bulbs are also monitored by the safety indicator unit. If a brake lamp bulb burns out, a failure sensor relay (located at each taillamp assembly) will open the signal circuit and the "BRAKE LAMP" indicator will illuminate. If the safety indicator unit does not work as described, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect wiring from safety indicator. Ensure Black wire has continuity to ground. See Fig 1
. If continuity does not exist, repair open in wire.

- Turn ignition on. Check Yellow wire for battery voltage. See Fig 1
. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check fuse No. 13 (No. 1 on Vigor) or Yellow wire for open. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Press brake pedal down. Check White/Green wire for continuity to ground. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, check fuse No. 32 (No. 30 on Vigor), brakelight switch, brakelight bulbs, brakelight failure sensor relay(s), ground circuit in trunk or White/Green wire for open. Repair as necessary.
- Remove fuse No. 57 (No. 37 on Vigor). Open trunk lid. Check Green/Black wire for continuity to ground. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, check trunk latch switch, ground circuit in trunk or Green/Black wire for open. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition on and move ceiling lamp switch to middle position. Touch Black/White wire to ground. Ceiling lamp should come on. If ceiling lamp comes on, go to next step. If ceiling lamp does not come on, check for blown fuse No. 37, faulty ceiling lamp assembly or for open in Black/White wire. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Remove fuse No. 57 (No. 37 on Vigor). Open left front door. Green/Blue wire should have continuity to ground. Open right front door. Green/Red wire should have continuity to ground. Open left rear door. Green/Yellow wire should have continuity to ground. Open right rear door. Green/White wire should have continuity to ground.
- If continuity does not operate as described, check appropriate door switch or for open wire. Repair as necessary. If continuity was as described and safety indicator system still does not work, replace safety indicator unit.
