DTC 2: Parking Brake

  1. Turn ignition on and apply parking brake. If brake system light comes on, go to step 3). If brake system light does not come on, check brake system light bulb in gauge assembly. If bulb is okay, go to next step. Replace bulb if faulty, and retest system.
  2. Using a jumper wire, ground gauge assembly 16-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Green/Red wire). See Figure . If brake system light does not come on, replace printed circuit in gauge assembly. If brake system light comes on, repair open in Green/Red wire between gauge assembly 16-pin connector terminal No. 3 and parking brake switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  3. Release parking brake. If brake system light goes out, go to next step. If brake system light stays on, check brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir. If brake fluid is at correct level, go to step 6). If brake fluid level is low, check for brake system leaks. If no leaks are found, check front brake pad thickness. If front brake pad thickness is okay, refill brake fluid reservoir and retest system. If front brake pad thickness is low, see appropriate DISC article.
  4. Test drive vehicle 6 MPH or more for at least 30 seconds. If TCS indicator light comes on, go to next step. If TCS indicator light does not come on, probable cause of DTC was that the vehicle was possibly driven for 30 seconds or more with the parking brake applied.
  5. Measure voltage between ground and TCS control unit 20-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Green/Red wire). See Figure . If battery voltage exists, replace TCS control unit. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Green/Red wire between gauge assembly and TCS control unit 20-pin connector terminal No. 2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  6. Disconnect brake fluid level switch connectors. If brake system light goes out, replace brake fluid level switch. If brake system light stays on, go to next step.
  7. Remove dashboard lower cover and knee bolster. Disconnect connector from parking brake switch (located on top of parking brake assembly). Check for continuity between switch terminal and ground. With parking brake in applied position (pedal pressed to floor), continuity should be indicated. With parking brake in the released position, continuity should not be indicated. If continuity is not as specified, replace parking brake switch. If continuity is as specified, go to next step.
  8. Disconnect TCS control unit 20-pin connector. If brake system light goes out, replace TCS control unit. If brake system light stays on, repair short to ground in Green/Red wire between brake system light, parking brake switch and brake fluid level switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
