Removal (2.3CL)

  1. Remove battery and battery tray. Remove air cleaner housing and air inlet duct as an assembly. Drain transaxle fluid. Disconnect cables and wiring harness clamp from starter. Unplug connector from back-up light switch. Remove vehicle speed sensor connector.
  2. Shift transmission into Reverse. Disconnect shift cable from transaxle. Remove clutch damper bracket. Remove clutch slave hydraulic hose bracket and slave cylinder. Remove 2 upper transaxle mounting bolts. Remove engine splash shield. Separate lower ball joints from control arms. Remove damper forks. Remove right radius arm. Remove axle shafts and intermediate shafts. See appropriate article in DRIVE AXLES.
  3. Remove engine brace. Remove clutch housing cover. Remove intake manifold bracket. Remove 3 rear transaxle mount bracket mounting bolts. Place floor jack under transaxle. Support engine with jack stands. Remove transaxle mount and bracket. Remove 3 lower transaxle bolts. Check for wires, hoses, or any other components that may still be attached. Move transaxle away from engine until shaft clears clutch. Lower transaxle to remove from vehicle.
  4. Before removing clutch from flywheel, measure diaphragm spring finger wear with feeler gauge, Handle (07936-3710100), Clutch Alignment Shaft (07NAF-PR30100), and Clutch Alignment Disc (07JAF-PM7011A). Wear limit is .03" (.8 mm). Install flywheel holder. If reusing clutch, mark pressure plate and flywheel for installation reference. Unscrew pressure plate bolts 2 turns at a time in a crisscross pattern, to prevent warpage.
