CATEGORY: TQI
APPLIES TO: All

NOTE: Supersedes 01-010, 2002 3.2TL: TQI and New Model Information, dated February 19, 2001.

DESCRIPTION

Most of the features, equipment, and delivery preparation procedures for the 2002-03 3.2TL are the same as for previous models. This service bulletin describes things that are unique to the 2002-03 models and things you need to know before you perform any service on it.

Many of the new features on the 3.2TL are shared with other Acura models. They are:

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

None. The information in this service bulletin is part of the Total Quality Inspection before delivery.

DRIVER'S WINDOW AUTO FUNCTION

  1. The driver's window now has a one-touch AUTO up function. If you pull back firmly on the driver's window switch (past the detent), then release it, the window will automatically raise fully. To stop this automatic movement, push down on the switch momentarily.
  2. If an obstruction is sensed as the window is going up automatically, the window stops, then lowers several inches, This sensing turns off when the window is just short of the fully raised position.
  3. If you disconnect the battery or replace the window regulator, you must reinitialize the system. To do this:
    1. Make sure the window is fully closed.
    2. Push down and hold the window switch. Make sure the window goes down all the way.
    3. Pull back and hold the window switch. Make sure the window goes up all the way, then hold the switch for at least 2 seconds longer.

SIDE AIRBAGS

The indicator on the instrument panel has been changed to read "SIDE AIRBAG OFF." The OPDS (occupant position detection system) has improved sensing of an out-of-position seat occupant.

LATCH SYSTEM

The outer seating positions in the rear now have provisions for the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system. The lower anchors are between the seat-back and seat bottom. Only LATCH compatible child seats should be used with this system. Refer to the owner's manual for instructions on how to install a child seat.

FOG LIGHTS

Fog lights are now standard equipment. They come on only when the low beam headlights are on.

FRONT HEADRESTS

The front headrests on the Premium model can be pivoted forward and backward. The headrests on the Type-S are fixed.

WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND WASHERS

The windshield wipers and washer nozzles are now behind the trailing edge of the hood. To change wiper blades, bring the wiper arms up to the middle of the windshield. To do this, turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then turn on the windshield wipers. When the arms reach the middle of the windshield, turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

TYPE-S WHEELS

Although they look very similar, the wheels on the 3.2TL and the 3.2CL are not the same. The CL wheels are wider, causing tire rub if they are installed on a 3.2TL.

ONSTAR SYSTEM CHECKS

NOTE: Before performing this procedure, you must complete all other TQI items. The OnStar system is operational from the factory, but the account will not be set up until the vehicle is sold. This procedure checks the system for faults, tests the control functions and audio output, and performs a cellular telephone test call.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the Accessory (I) or ON (II) position.
NOTE: If you are in the basement or surrounded by tall buildings, you may need to park the vehicle outside, away from the buildings. This allows for a stronger signal, making it possible for the phone system to work when you are performing the OnStar system checks.

    FAULT CHECK

  2. Look at the OnStar indicator. See Fig 1 .
NOTE: If the indicator is green (not blinking), but the system is not functioning as described in this bulletin, call OnStar dealer support at 1-888-667-8271.
    • If the indicator is green (not blinking), go to step  3 .
    • If the indicator is blinking green, press the Call Answer/End Button once, turn the ignition switch off, and go back to step  1 .
    • If the indicator is not illuminated or is red, see the service manual to diagnose and repair the system.

    CONTROL FUNCTION/AUDIO OUTPUT CHECK

  3. Turn on the audio system, tune in a radio station, and set the volume to a comfortable level.
  4. Press the blue OnStar button once; the indicator blinks green, and the system is active.
    • If the sound from the audio system mutes, and you hear an OnStar demonstration message through all of the audio system speakers then move to step  5 .
    • If you do not hear the OnStar demonstration, see the service manual to diagnose and repair the system.

    CELLULAR TELEPHONE TEST CALL

  5. During the demonstration message, press the blue OnStar button; the indicator blinks green.
    • If the message stops and you hear "Connecting to . . . OnStar," go to step  6 .
    • If you do not hear the "Connecting to . . . OnStar" message, or another message starts, see the service manual to diagnose and repair the system.
  6. Listen for a telephone ringing sound.
    • If you hear ringing, press the Call Answer/End button once to end the test call before the call is answered. After you have successfully completed this procedure, the OnStar system is fully functional and ready for delivery.
    • If you do not hear a ring, press the Call Answer/End button once to end the call. Repeat steps  3 thru 6 .

ONSTAR SYSTEM GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. The OnStar system does not require anti-theft codes. The main system components are located on the trunk wall behind the rear seat-back, and you must remove the rear seat to access the components.
