TQI PROCEDURES
- Perfect Delivery documents, especially the information on battery maintenance and tire pressures.
- TQI checklist in the maintenance journal.
Also, make sure you record the TQI on the appropriate pages of the maintenance journal. The TQI is not finished until the procedures in this service bulletin and the maintenance journal checklist are completed.
Check the Battery
To ensure long battery life and that the client receives a fully charged battery, the battery must be checked in these instances:
- When the vehicle first arrives at the dealership
- During the TQI (if done at a later time)
- During regular intervals
- Just before delivering the vehicle to the client
Test the battery with the ED-18 battery tester using the instructions in Service Bulletin 88-016 , Battery Testing and Replacement. Do not use the battery's test indicator window to check its state of charge. If the ED-18 tester does not show GOOD BATTERY, charge the battery using the GR8 Battery Diagnostic station.
Write down the GOOD BATTERY 10-digit code in the maintenance journal: During the TQI, write down the code in the "Under Hood (Engine Cold)" section, and then when the vehicle is delivered to the client, write down the code in the "Final Inspection (At Delivery)" section.
Install the No. 15 Fuse
To prevent battery drain during shipping, the No. 15 fuse (40 A, Backup, ACC) is removed from the under-hood fuse/relay box and stored in the glove box. Make sure you install this fuse with the ignition switch in LOCK (0).
Install the Ignition Switch Cover
Remove the ignition switch cover from the glove box, and press it into place over the ignition switch. With the ignition switch cover installed, the engine can be started without a key when the keyless access remote is inside the vehicle.
Do the Idle Learn Procedure
To ensure a steady engine idle, do the idle learn procedure after installing the No. 15 fuse. Idle learn must also be done after you update or replace the PCM, but not after clearing DTCs.
- Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off.
- Start the engine, and let it reach its normal operating temperature (the cooling fans cycle twice).
- Let the engine idle (with the throttle fully closed and all electrical items off) for 10 minutes.
Do the CKP-Pattern Learn Procedure
To ensure proper engine operation, do the CKP-pattern learn procedure after doing the idle learn procedure. Do this procedure on a level road during your TQI test-drive.
The procedure consists of a low-rpm and a high-rpm pattern learn. Make sure you do the low-rpm pattern learn first.
- Low-rpm Pattern Learn: Move the shift lever to S, then use the paddle shifter to shift to 3, and decelerate with the throttle fully closed from 2,500 rpm to 1,000 rpm.
- High-rpm Pattern Learn: With the shift lever in S, use the paddle shifter to shift to 1, and decelerate with the throttle fully closed from 5,000 rpm to 3,000 rpm.
Remove the Interior Protective Coverings
There are several protective covers on interior trim pieces. Carefully remove all of them. Make sure to remove the blue plastic film from the sill trim.
Install the Shift Lock Release Cover
The shift lock release cover is in the glove box. Install the cover in the shift lock release slot on the left side of the shift lever.
Install the Floor Mats
The floor mats come stored in the trunk. Install the mats in the appropriate positions. Place the mat eyelets over the anchors on the floor, then turn the knobs clockwise to lock the anchors.
Set the Tire Pressures
To prevent flat spots during shipping and storage, the tires are inflated to over 40 psi. Adjust the tire pressures to the cold inflation pressures listed on the driver's doorjamb label. If you are in a cold climate region, make sure the tires are at the outside ambient temperature before adjusting the pressures; otherwise, the TPMS low tire pressure indicator may show low tire pressure in cold weather. Be sure to also check the pressure in the spare tire.
Install the Tie-Down Hole Grommets
Four grommets that go in the inner side sills are stored in the license plate holder bag in the trunk. Install these grommets in the front and rear tie-down holes on both sides of the vehicle. If the grommets are not installed, the vehicle will have a difficult-to-diagnose wind noise.
Install the Front License Plate Holder
The front license plate holder and mounting hardware are in the trunk. If state regulations require the use of a front license plate, do this:
- Use a utility knife or diagonal cutters to cut out the two thin areas from the back side of the front bumper cover where the clip nuts will mount.
- Install the clip nuts onto the bumper cover.
- Position the bolt holes on the license plate holder over the clip nuts, then install the bolts.
- Drill three 4 mm holes through the bumper cover in the locations shown.
- Install the three blunt-tipped, self-tapping bolts.NOTE: The four remaining pointed self-tapping bolts are for the front license plate, and the two shiny threaded bolts and the two pan-head, self-tapping screws are for the rear license plate.
Remove the Protective Film From the Front Strakes
The front strakes have a protective film to reduce damage during transport. Remove this film.
Enter the Audio Unit Anti-Theft Code and the AM/FM Radio Station Presets
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and turn on the audio unit. If you see CODE in the audio system upper display, use the audio system preset buttons to enter the 5-digit anti-theft code. The anti-theft code is on the radio ID card in the glove box.
- Enter a local AM or FM station on all the radio preset buttons (AM, FM1, and FM2). To enter a station, tune to it, then press and hold the preset button until you hear a beep.
Check/Refresh the XM Radio Dealer Demo Service (All Except Alaskan and Hawaiian Models)
The audio system comes from the factory activated with the XM Satellite Radio dealer demo service. Once you install the No. 15 fuse, the XM radio receives the full range of available XM channels. Make sure the service is activated by tuning to several XM channels. You can find the full list of XM channels at www.xmradio.com . If XM radio receives only a small number of channels like 000, 001 , and 247 , the dealer demo is not activated.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Turn on the radio, enter the 4-digit navigation anti-theft code (if not already done), and press the XM button.
- Make sure the radio is in CHANNEL MODE , not CATEGORY MODE . Press and hold the DISP-MODE button until the mode changes (without navigation), or touch the MODE icon (with navigation) to switch between modes.
- Tune to channel 001 (the XM preview channel) to make sure you are receiving the XM signal. If you do not get a clear signal, park the vehicle outside where there is a clear view of the southern sky.
- While watching the audio unit display, tune to several channels within the full XM lineup. To see the full list of XM channels, go to www.xmradio.com.
- If you can tune to all the XM channels, the dealer demo service is activated. Tune to channel 001, and leave the radio on for 7 minutes to refresh the dealer demo service. No further action is needed.
- If you can only tune a few channels like 000, 001 , and 247 , the dealer demo service is not yet activated, and an activation refresh needs to be done. Go to step 6.
- Turn the TUNE knob to 000
, then write down the 8-character XM radio ID you see in the audio unit display. You need this ID, your dealer number, and the VIN to do an activation refresh of the dealer demo service. Then go to step 7.NOTE:
- If you cannot tune to channel 000 , you are in CATEGORY MODE . See step 3 above to switch from CATEGORY MODE to CHANNEL MODE .
- Check the ID code carefully. The letters I, O, S, and F are not used.
- Go to an iN workstation.NOTE: If you don't have access to the iN, call XM Satellite Radio at 800-852-9696 , and follow the instructions on the automated menu. When the agent answers, ask for a rapid dealer activation refresh, then go to step 10.
- From the iN main menu, click on SERVICE,
click on Service Bay,
and then click on XM Radio.
This brings up the DEALER ACTIVATION REFRESH
screen.NOTE: If you cannot bring up this display, call the iN Support Center.
- Enter the 8-character XM radio ID you wrote down in step 6, then click on Submit.
You will see the ACTIVATION REFRESH
screen once the ID is recognized.NOTE: If you enter the ID incorrectly, or if it is not recognized, you will see an error display. If this happens, follow the instructions on the display.
- Turn the TUNE knob to 001 to make sure you are receiving the XM signal. If you do not get a clear signal, park the vehicle outside where there is a clear view of the southern sky, then go to step 11.
- Leave the radio on for at least 10 minutes, then go to step 12.
- While watching the audio unit display, tune to several stations wthin the full XM lineup.
- If you can tune to all the XM channels, the dealer demo service is activated, and no further action is needed.
- If you can only tune a few channels like 000, 001 , and 247 , repeat steps 7 thru 12.
- If, after 2 hours, you can only tune to channels 000, 001 , and 247 , call XM Satellite Radio at 800-852-9696 . When you hear the automated menu, enter priority code 9466 to route your call to an XM agent. When the agent answers, ask them to review the account status and make any necessary corrections. If the account status is correct for the vehicle, replace the XM receiver.
- The dealer demo service lasts for 7 months or until the vehicle's RDR (retail delivery registration) is submitted.
- After the vehicle is registered, the dealer demo service converts to a client account. The client gets a 3-month trial service of all available non-premium XM channels. If the client decides to end the service after that time, the XM radio reverts to preview mode. Normal AM and FM radio reception is not affected by ending the service.
- The XM radio receives digital programming broadcasts from two fixed-orbit satellites above the equator along with a network of ground antennas (repeaters). You will get the strongest signal if you move the vehicle where there is a clear view of the southern sky.
- The XM radio may lose reception when you are driving through a tunnel, under an overpass, inside a parking garage, or near the northern face of a canyon or a mountain.
- To cut down on reception loss, XM radio uses a buffer. If the reception loss lasts longer than the buffering period, the signal goes silent.
- Because the XM radio signal is digital, any reception loss makes the signal go silent; the signal usually does not fade like it does with an AM/FM radio.
- If you ever need to replace the XM radio receiver, call XM Radio at 800-852-9696 . Be prepared to give them your dealer number, the VIN, and the XM radio ID from the printed label on the side of the old and the new receiver units.
Check/Initialize the Compass System (Models Without Navigation)
The compass system is basically ready to use when the vehicle is delivered to the dealership. Since the system interfaces with other systems in the vehicle, it is important to ensure that all of the systems are initialized so they will work properly for the client. To initialize the system, follow this procedure.
The compass system on the RL is different from other models as it has a compass CD and uses GPS satellites to verify its direction.
- Turn on the radio, and enter the 4-digit compass anti-theft code (if not already done).
- Make sure the MID (multi-information display) shows Welcome DRIVER
1 or Welcome DRIVER 2
when you first get into the vehicle and turn the ignition switch to ON (II).NOTE: If the MID only shows Welcome when you turn the ignition switch to ON (II), the remotes are not linked with the vehicle, and any changes made to the Date/Time setup settings, audio unit presets, the address book, etc. cannot be saved.
You must link the remotes before proceeding. See the Body Electrical section of the 11-12 RL Service Manual , or online, enter keywords KEYLESS DESC , and select Keyless/Power Door Locks/ Security System Description from the list.
- You may see a screen with BASE
and KX
shown. This is part of the compass in-line diag screen. If this screen appears, do the following. If not, go to step 4.
- Select BASE.
The screen changes to the in-line diag screen.NOTE: Do NOT select KX. Otherwise, the compass may not work properly.
- Press and hold the MENU, COMPASS, and CANCEL buttons at the same time until the Select diagnosis
menu screen comes up. Then release the buttons.
- Press and hold the COMPASS button for at least 15 seconds.
- Select Complete on the screen, then select Return twice to exit the diagnostic mode.
- Select BASE.
The screen changes to the in-line diag screen.
- Start the engine, and move the vehicle outside, away from buildings and power lines. Then enter the 4-digit security code for the compass system. The code is on the anti-theft code card.NOTE:
- If the anti-theft code card is lost, you can find the code on the iN by using the anti-theft code option and the navigation unit serial number. To get the serial number, go to the Navi ECU screen (refer to the navigation system diagnostic mode in the service manual), or look on the underside of the navigation ECU (compass) unit.
- If you cannot find the code on the iN, contact American Honda's Warranty Department.
- If the anti-theft code does not work, try entering 0000 (four zeros) as the code. If the system accepts this, replace the navigation (compass) control unit.
- The following instructions appear on the screen to indicate the system is initializing (determining its location from the GPS satellites). Follow the on-screen instructions.NOTE: The average initialization takes about 10 minutes, but it can take as long as 45 minutes. If initialization completes within 10 minutes, the display changes to the globe screen.
- If the system does not
initialize within 10 minutes, a second screen, shown below, appears. The system is still initializing but will not automatically exit to the globe screen when the initialization is complete. Do not
immediately follow the instructions on the screen. After 30 minutes, try restarting the vehicle to see if the navigation system completed the initialization. If not, follow the instructions on the screen.NOTE: The initialization screen may appear after battery voltage to the navigation control unit has been disconnected for more than 5 minutes. If this occurs, follow the on-screen instructions. If you are still unable to obtain GPS initialization, refer to the service manual for diagnostic information.
- When initialization is complete, the disclaimer screen appears. Select OK
.
Set the Clock (Models Without Navigation)
The clock uses the GPS signal to keep time even though it does not have a navigation system. When adjusting the time, you are adjusting the time relative to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), not your local time.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Go into Setup, and select Clock Adjustment with the interface selector.
- Push the interface selector to the right to reset the time to GMT.
- Make sure the Clock Type is set to 24H. If it is not, select Clock Type
and change it.NOTE: The clock does not display AM or PM. If you set the clock while the Clock Type is set to 12H, you may set the wrong time.
- Select Time Adjustment .
- Turn the interface selector until you have the correct hour.NOTE: The minutes do not need correcting; they are set by the GPS signal.
- Press the center of the interface selector to set the time and return to the clock adjustment.
- Change the Clock Type to 12H, then exit Setup.
Check Voice Interaction and Set Up Options
- Check voice interaction with the audio system and the upper display. Press and release the TALK button. After the beep, say "XM channel 122." The upper display should change.
- Check voice interaction with the climate control system. Turn on the climate control system by selecting AUTO. Then press and release the TALK button. After the beep, say "temperature 68 degrees." The upper display should change to 68 degrees.
- Press the DISPLAY MODE button to verify that the display changes between the Day, Night, and OFF modes.
- Press the SET UP button, or use the voice interaction system and say "Set up." Then verify these settings:
- Volume is set to the midrange.
- Brightness is set so the display can be seen in bright sunlight.
Initialize the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System)
If the TPMS indicator on the instrument panel stays on when the ignition switch is in the ON (II) position, do this to initialize the system:
Reset the Climate Control Unit
During vehicle shipment, DTCs can be stored by the climate control unit. To clear these, do this:
Remove the Exterior Protective Coatings
Carefully remove the exterior protective coatings, but do not remove the protective plastic on the forward edge of the rear fenders. This protective plastic helps to prevent rock chips on the front of the fender. Also, make sure to remove the protective tape from the front chin spoiler (under the front bumper). Refer to Service Bulletin 96-009 , Removal of Protective Coatings During TQI .
