DTC P2746: Even Gear Shaft Speed Sensor (Range/Performance)
General Description
The even gear shaft speed sensor is attached to the outside of the transmission housing. The even gear shaft speed sensor generates a pulsing signal according to the speed of the pulse plate of the main clutch. Using that signal, the powertrain control module (PCM) determines the speed of the main clutch. If no pulses occur with the main clutch rotating, the PCM detects a malfunction that may be caused by an open, a temporary open, or a short to ground. The PCM detects a malfunction which is based on each of the following criteria depending on the gear condition;
When the vehicle is driven at even gear:
- The velocity ratio measured by the input shaft speed sensor and the even gear shaft speed sensor.
- The velocity ratio measured by the output shaft speed sensor and the even gear shaft speed sensor.
When the gear engagement is detected by the shift fork position sensor during shift change control:
- The speed difference between output shaft speed sensor and even gear shaft speed sensor.

Malfunction Threshold
When the vehicle is driven at even gear (detected by the vehicle speed ratio):
- The vehicle speed measured by the input shaft speed sensor [Input Shaft (Mainshaft) Speed] divided by the vehicle speed measured by the even gear shaft speed sensor [Vehicle Speed from EVEN Shaft Speed] is more than 1.5 for at least 2 seconds.
- The vehicle speed measured by the input shaft speed sensor [Input Shaft (Mainshaft) Speed] divided by the vehicle speed measured by the even gear shaft speed sensor [Vehicle Speed from EVEN Shaft Speed] is less than 0.5 for at least 2 seconds.
- The vehicle speed measured by the output shaft speed sensor [Output Shaft (CounterShaft) Speed] divided by the vehicle speed measured by the even gear shaft speed sensor [Vehicle Speed from EVEN Shaft Speed] is more than 1.5 for at least 2 seconds.
- The vehicle speed measured by the output shaft speed sensor [Output Shaft (CounterShaft) Speed] divided by the vehicle speed measured by the even gear shaft speed sensor [Vehicle Speed from EVEN Shaft Speed] is less than 0.5 for at least 2 seconds.
When the gear engagement is detected by the shift fork position sensor during shift change control (detected by the rotational difference):
- The speed difference between output shaft speed sensor and even gear shaft speed sensor is more than 80 RPM for at most 12 seconds.
Possible Cause
- Even gear shaft speed sensor line short to ground
- Even gear shaft speed sensor line open (includes connector loose connection or disconnection)
- Even gear shaft speed sensor failure
- PCM internal circuit failure
Confirmation Procedure
With the HDS
None.
With the Driving Pattern
- Start the engine.
- Drive the vehicle at a speed of 7 mph (10 km/h) or more in 2nd gear for at least 3 seconds.
- Drive the vehicle in this manner only if the traffic regulations and ambient conditions allow.
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected during the first drive cycle, a Pending DTC is stored in the PCM memory. If the malfunction returns in the next (second) drive cycle, the MIL comes on and a Confirmed DTC and the freeze data are stored.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data can be cleared with the scan tool Clear command or by disconnecting the battery.
