Starter Performance Test (3.0L Engine): Test
NOTICE:
- Before this test, clamp the starter firmly in a vise.
- Make the connections for this test using the thickest (gauge) wire possible (preferably the same gauge as used on the vehicle).
- To avoid damaging the starter, never leave the 12 volt battery connected for more than 5 seconds.
- Starter Performance (Suction) - Test
Preconditions
- Starter Removed - Refer to: Starter Area(2.0L Engine) or Starter Area(3.0L Engine)
Procedure/Specifications
1. Disconnect the motor wire from the M terminal.
2. Connect the 12 volt battery as shown, and check the starter performance.
Specifications
Specification The starter pinion moves out Result
- If it is abnormal, replace the starter.
- Starter Performance (Retract) - Test
Preconditions
- Starter Removed - Refer to: Starter Area(2.0L Engine) or Starter Area(3.0L Engine)

Procedure/Specifications

2. Connect the 12 volt battery as shown. (Figure 1)

3. Disconnect the 12 volt battery from the M terminal, and check the starter performance. (Figure 2)

4. Disconnect the 12 volt battery from the starter body, and check the starter performance. (Figure 3)

- If it is abnormal, replace the starter.
- Starter Performance (No Load) - Test
Preconditions
- Starter Removed - Refer to: Starter Area(2.0L Engine) or Starter Area(3.0L Engine)
Procedure/Specifications
- Connect the starter to the 12 volt battery as shown, and confirm that the motor runs.NOTE: If the electric current meets the specification when the 12 volt battery voltage is at 11.5 V, the starter is working properly.
Specifications
Standard Value 110 A or less Result
- If the measurement is not within specifications, replace the starter.
