Steering Column Inspection: Inspection

How to use this manual .

  1. Tilting Force - Check

    Procedure/Specifications 

    1. Set the steering wheel in the straight ahead driving position, and loosen the lock lever fully.

    2. Pull the spring scale, and read the force required to move the steering column.

  2. Telescoping Force - Check

    Procedure/Specifications 

    1. Set the steering wheel in the straight ahead driving position, and loosen the lock lever fully.

    2. Pull the spring scale, and read the force required to move the steering column during telescoping out.

  3. Lock Lever Force - Check

    Procedure/Specifications 

    1. Move the lock lever (a) from the loosened position to the locked position three to five times, then release the lock lever. Adjust the steering column to the center tilt position and also to the full telescopic out position, and hold the steering wheel.

    2. Push up the lock lever measure point (b), and measure the force required to move the lock lever.

  4. Steering Column - Inspect

    Preconditions 

    Procedure/Specifications 

    • Check these items:
      • Check the tilt and telescopic mechanism for movement and damage.
      • Check the following parts.

    Steering Column Check Items 

    Check Location Component Normal Conditions
    a Column Shaft Bearing
    • No excessive play
    • Smooth movement
    • No abnormal noise
    b Steering Joint Bearing
    • No clearance
    • Smooth movement
    • No abnormal noise
    c Slide Shaft Smooth movement in and out
    • Apply grease to the steering column.

      NOTICE: 

      Do not use silicone grease.
