Test No 9: Idle Speed Control System Test
NOTE:
This test must be performed with engine at normal operating temperature and after CEC system diagnostic tests are completed.
- Turn off all accessories including rear window defogger, headlights and A/C. Adjust engine idle speed if necessary. Turn engine off and restart while monitoring throttle position during the first 60 seconds of engine operation. Solvac throttle positioner should be fully extended during the first 15 seconds and then should move to intermediate position for the next 45 seconds and then disengage.
- If not, go to step 4). If so, turn A/C on and lightly tap the accelerator pedal. Check for increased idle speed. If not, repair wire from A/C relay to solvac solenoid and retest. If yes, turn A/C off and turn headlights on while lightly tapping the accelerator pedal. If idle speed does not increase, repair wire from headlights to solvac solenoid and retest.
- If idle speed does increase, turn on rear window defogger while lightly tapping the accelerator pedal. Check for an increase in idle speed. If yes, test is complete. If not, repair wire from rear window defogger relay to solvac solenoid and retest.
- If in step 1 solvac throttle positioner was fully extended during the first 15 seconds, test for battery voltage at solvac solenoid during the first 60 seconds of operation. If there is no voltage, perform idle speed relay TEST NO 11 and retest. If there is voltage, replace solvac solenoid and retest.
- If in step 1 the solvac throttle positioner was not fully extended during the first 15 seconds, disconnect vacuum hose from solvac solenoid and check for vacuum during the first 15 seconds of engine operation. If there is vacuum, replace solvac solenoid and retest. If there is no vacuum, perform vacuum switching test solenoid TEST NO 10 .
