SUBJECT

Throttle Valve Control Module -J338-, Will Not Adapt

CONDITION

When performing the Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- adaptation procedure, the procedure aborts.

DTC's which may be associated with condition:

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

DTC	Description
P1559	Throttle position adaptation malfunction
P1565	Throttle position lower limit not attained

May be caused by contaminants (dirt, oil, carbon) accumulated over long period of time on interior surfaces of Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- and around the edges of throttle plate.

SERVICE

Whenever the Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- must be re-adapted, if the adaptation procedure aborts before completion or ends with described DTC stored in ECM DTC memory, DO NOT replace Throttle Valve Control Module -J338-:

Remove intake boot from Throttle Valve Control Module -J338-.
Inspect interior surface of Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- and throttle plate for dirt / oil film.

If interior of Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- is not dirty:

Reinstall intake boot.
Continue with diagnosis, (see appropriate Repair Manual group or VAS 5051 Guided Fault Finding).

If interior of Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- is dirty / oily:

DO NOT replace Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- for this condition.

Over a long period of time it is possible that dirt can accumulate on the inner surfaces.

Clean interior surfaces of Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- (on both sides of throttle plate) with a soft clean cloth (see below).

THROTTLE VALVE CONTROL MODULE -J338-, CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

It is not necessary to remove the Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- to clean.

For heavier deposits of dirt / oil film, apply Wynn's(tm)X-Trend V.I.C. Combustion Chamber Cleaner: Part No: 61510 (U.S.), Part No: 61512 (CAN) on a soft clean cloth then, clean interior surfaces using this cloth (one can of cleaner will do many vehicles, therefore it is considered shop supply)
CAUTION: Always read and follow Manufacturers Cautions and Warnings regarding the use of the product.
Reinstall intake boot.

After cleaning Throttle Valve Control Module -J338-:

Perform Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- adaptation (see Repair group 24 of appropriate Repair Manual).

If after several attempts the adaptation procedure is still unsuccessful (see AESIS for more details on proper adaptation conditions), then proceed with further diagnosis of the Throttle Valve Control Module -J338-.

NOTE: In some cases, before being able to erase DTC P1559, it may be necessary to cycle the ignition key (to change DTC status to sporadic) and perform the adaptation of the throttle.
