DTC P0106/16490: Testing

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove engine cover. Disconnect Charge Air Pressure (CAP) sensor 4-pin harness connector. CAP sensor is located in air intake pipe at front of engine compartment, below throttle valve control module. Inspect CAP sensor harness connector for looseness and/or corrosion. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  7.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between CAP sensor harness connector terminals No. 1 and 3. See Fig 1. Voltage reading should be 5 volts. If voltage is not as specified, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step  7.

  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Engine Control Module (ECM) harness connector. ECM is located in left rear corner of engine compartment, in electronics box. Connect VAG 1598/31 test box between ECM harness connector and ECM. Check for open, short to voltage or short to ground between CAP sensor harness connector and specified test box sockets. See CHECKING CHARGE AIR PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUITS  table. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  7.

  4. Connect CAP sensor harness connector. Connect DVOM between VAG test box sockets No. 101 and 108. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Voltage should be approximately 1.9 volts. Snap throttle open. Voltage should rise to between 2-3 volts. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step  7.
  5. Check for open, short to voltage or short to ground in Blue/Gray wire between CAP sensor harness connector No. 4 and VAG test socket No. 101. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  7.
  6. Replace CAP sensor. After repair, go to next step.
  7. Using scan tool, clear DTCs and generate a ECM readiness code. See FUNCTION 05 - CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  and READINESS CODE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Test drive vehicle. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTC does not reset, testing is complete.
