Power Steering Pump: Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

NOTE:

Replace seals and gaskets.

Before installing the new power steering pump on the intake side, fill the Hydraulic Oil and install it by hand until oil drains out on the high pressure side.

Use new hose clamps on all hose connections. Allocation. Refer to the Parts.

-- Turn the hub by hand until oil runs out of the pressure side.

-- To assist attachment of vane pump, drive threaded sleeve for rear bolt back slightly in bracket.

-- Install the power steering pump and tighten the bolts -1 and 2-.

-- Install the new gaskets -5- on the banjo bolt.

-- Tighten the banjo bolt -2 -.

-- Position the suction hose -3- with a new clamping sleeve -4- and tighten. Note the installation position. Refer to RESERVOIR AND SUCTION HOSES INSTALLATION POSITION .

Marking -P- on suction hose -3- must align with formed seam on the pump.

-- Clean oiled places in engine compartment.

-- Install the A/C compressor on the bracket -arrows-.

-- Connect the A/C compressor electrical wire connector -1-.

-- Tighten the ribbed belt pulley bolts. Refer to Tightening Specifications .

Install power steering pump ribbed belt. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP RIBBED BELT PULLEY .

-- Install noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .

-- Check power steering fluid level. Refer to POWER STEERING FLUID, CHECKING .

-- Bleed the steering. Refer to STEERING, BLEEDING AFTER REPLACING .

-- Check the steering for leaks. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS .

-- Place vehicle on wheels. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

-- Install ribbed belt and check alignment of ribbed belt. Refer to RIBBED BELT .

NOTE:

When installing ribbed belt, ensure it is correctly seated in ribbed belt pulley.

  1. Generator
  2. Idler pulley
  3. Coolant pump
  4. Power steering pump
  5. A/C Compressor
  6. Tensioner pulley
  7. Crankshaft


Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Depending on the version of the power steering pump:

-- Complete vane pump as shown in illustration and install on engine.

  1. Power steering pump
  2. O-ring
  3. Sleeve, grease the splines all the way around. Allocation. Refer to the Parts.
  4. O-ring
  5. Input shaft, grease the splines all the way around. Allocation. Refer to the Parts.
  6. Spring, lubricate before installing into the drive axle. Allocation. Refer to the Parts.
  7. Buffer stop

Depending on the version of the power steering pump:

-- Complete pump as shown in illustration and install on engine.

  1. Power steering pump
  2. Seal
  3. Driveshaft, when reinstalling, lubricate the drive shaft splines and the power steering pump all the way around, apply grease into the hole on the end of the shaft on the engine side. Allocation. Refer to the Parts.

Installation position of intake hoses on vane pump and reservoir. Refer to RESERVOIR AND SUCTION HOSES INSTALLATION POSITION .

-- Turn the hub by hand until oil runs out of the pressure side.

-- Tighten the bolts -4-.

-- Tighten bolt -B-.

-- Place the suction hose -4- on the power steering pump and secure it with a new clamp -3-.

-- Connect the pressure hose -2- with the banjo bolt -1- to the pump.

-- Install the drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE .

-- Install the subframe.

-- Only tighten the subframe bolts to the specification, do not tighten them further (only tighten the bolts after an alignment).

WARNING:

If vehicle will be driving on the streets, all bolts and nuts must be tightened properly!

-- Top off Hydraulic Oil.

-- Bleed the steering. Refer to STEERING, BLEEDING AFTER REPLACING .

-- Check power steering fluid level. Refer to POWER STEERING FLUID, CHECKING .

-- Check the steering for leaks. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS .

-- Install noise insulation. Refer to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

-- Place vehicle on wheels. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

-- Perform an axle alignment. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT .

WARNING:

Tighten the subframe bolts to the end position after the alignment.



Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

-- Complete vane pump as shown in illustration and install on engine.

  1. Power steering pump
  2. Seal
  3. Grease the splines on the input and the power steering pump before installing. Allocation. Refer to the Parts.

-- Turn the hub by hand until oil runs out of the pressure side.

-- Install pressure line -2- on pump.

-- Tighten bolts -4-.

-- Tighten bolt -3-.

-- Connect intake hose -1- to pump and secure with clamp.

-- Top off Hydraulic Oil.

Installation position of intake hoses on reservoir. Refer to RESERVOIR AND SUCTION HOSES INSTALLATION POSITION .

-- Clean oily areas on subframe.

-- Install drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE .

-- Install left catalytic converter. Refer to Removing .

-- Install engine. Refer to ENGINE, INSTALLING .

-- Only tighten the subframe bolts to the specification, do not tighten them further (only tighten the bolts after an alignment).

WARNING:

All bolts and nuts must be tightened properly before driving the vehicle!

-- Bleed the steering. Refer to STEERING, BLEEDING AFTER REPLACING .

-- Check power steering fluid level. Refer to POWER STEERING FLUID, CHECKING .

-- Check the steering for leaks. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS .

-- Place vehicle on wheels. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

-- Perform an axle alignment. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT .
