ATF Level, Checking
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500
- ATF Filler Tool VAG1924
- Protective eyewear
Test Conditions
- The transmission must not be in the emergency running
- Move vehicle onto a four-pillar workshop hoist or over a work pit so that it is absolutely horizontal.
- The selector level is in "P".
- The parking brake button should be activated to set the electromechanical parking brake.
- Exhaust hose/-hoses of an exhaust extraction system connected.
- The A/C and the heater are off.
- The Vehicle Diagnostic Tester is connected.
- The ATF temperature must not be higher than 30 °C (86 °F) at the beginning of the test. Let the transmission must cool down first, if necessary.
The ATF temperature is read out on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
The ATF level will vary depending on the temperature of the ATF.
It is possible to overfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too low.
It is possible to underfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too high.
Overfilling or underfilling will influence the function of the transmission.
Procedure
-- Select the following menu entries on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in "function/component selection" in Guided Fault Finding :
- "Drivetrain "
- " 0B6-Transmission"
- "01-OBD-capable systems"
- "02-transmission electronics"
- "02-Transmission electronics, functions"
- "02-Read measured value"
-- Select the measured value "transmission fluid temperature" on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
-- Check the ATF temperature.
ATF Level, Checking and Correcting
The ATF level is checked at the ATF inspection plug.
The ATF level is correct if a small amount of fluid drips out of the inspection hole (this is normal as the fluid expands as it heats up) at an ATF temperature 35 ° to 45 °C (95 ° to 113 °F) (for hot countries 50 °C (122 °F)).
Danger of Causing Damage to the Transmission.
- Only use the ATF available as a replacement part for the automatic transmission 0B6.
- Using other fluids can cause malfunctions or transmission failure. Allocate correct fluid.
- The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other oils.
-- Fill the reservoir on the ATF Filler Tool VAG1924 with the ATF for the automatic transmission 0B6 .
-- Secure reservoir of ATF Filler Tool VAG1924 as high as possible on vehicle.
Danger of Causing Damage to the Transmission.
- Engine must not be started if only a small amount or no ATF is in the transmission after repair work or after significant ATF loss.
- In this case, pre-filling is necessary, refer to ATF, DRAINING AND FILLING .
-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-, refer to REAR NOISE INSULATION .
-- Start the engine with the selector lever in "P".
-- While pressing the brake pedal and with the vehicle idling, shift through all the selector lever positions ("P", "R", "N", "D", "S") leaving each position engaged for at least 10 seconds.
-- Move the selector lever into "N".
-- Increase the RPM to 2000 and hold it there for at least 60 seconds.
-- Move the selector lever into "P".
-- Run the engine at idle.
-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the transmission.
Danger of eye injury.
- Wear protective eyewear.
-- When ATF temperature of 35° C (95° F) is reached, remove the ATF inspection plug -arrow B- and drain off any excess ATF.
The ATF inspection plug is accessible through the opening on the tunnel crossmember.
- If ATF drips from the ATF inspection opening before the ATF has reached 40° C (104 °F), the ATF level -arrow- is OK.
The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches a temperature of 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) with hot climates).
-- Fasten ATF inspection plug with new gasket -arrow- to 9 Nm. The ATF level test is now completed.
-- Install the noise insulation, refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
- If no ATF drips out of the ATF inspection opening when the temperature has reached 40°C (104 °F):
ATF, Filling
The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) for countries with hot climates). Let the transmission cool down and check again.
-- Guide filler hook of ATF Filler Tool VAG1924 from underneath into an opening in the cap -arrow-, do not push cap up and in while doing so.
-- Add ATF using ATF Filler Tool VAG1924 until ATF drips from the check hole.
Too little or too much ATF will impair the transmission.
-- Fasten ATF inspection plug with new gasket -arrow- to 9 Nm. The ATF level test is now completed.
-- Remove the ATF residue on the tunnel crossmember and clean the crossmember thoroughly.
There are several recesses on the top side of the tunnel crossmember where leaking ATF can collect.
They must be cleaned thoroughly.
Ignore -arrows-.
-- Install the rear noise insulation, refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
