Bevel Box: Removing

-- With the vehicle still standing on its wheels, loosen the right twelve-point bolt -arrow- a maximum of 90°, otherwise the wheel bearing will get damaged, refer to DRIVE AXLE THREADED CONNECTION, LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING .

NOTE:

Do not place vehicle on floor after loosening bolt.

-- Lift the vehicle, all four take-up points of lifting platform at same height.

NOTE:

To make it possible to rotate the driveshaft later so it can be loosened:

-- Move the selector lever into "N".

-- Turn off the ignition.

-- Remove the right front wheel.

-- Remove the noise insulation -1-, refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING and OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Disconnect the connector -1- on the Oil Level Thermal Sensor -G266-.

-- Unclip the bracket -2- for the Oil Level Thermal Sensor -G266- wire from the subframe.

-- If equipped: remove the nut -4- from the bracket for the Right Front Level Control Sensor -G289-.

NOTE:

Ignore items -1, 2 and 3-.

-- Remove the right drive axle, refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the nuts -1- and the right drive axle heat shield.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shield -1-.

-- Mark the position of the flexible disc and the bevel box output flange to each other for later use.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- connecting the drive axle flexible disc to the bevel box.

NOTE:

Counterhold the rear final drive to loosen and tighten the drive axle.

To loosen the "next" bolt, rotate the drive axle by turning the rear wheels.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- from exhaust system bracket on the subframe.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- and slide the clamping sleeve to the back.

CAUTION:

There is a danger of causing damage to the decoupling element.

  • Do not bend the decoupling element in the front exhaust pipe more than 10°.

-- Tie up the front exhaust pipe.

-- Remove the bolt -1- for the pendulum support, push the engine/transmission assembly forward -arrow- until the bolt can be installed.

-- Remove the drive axle from the bevel box and support using a suitable piece of wood on the steering gear heat shield.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging sealing ring -arrow - in drive axle flange.

  • Press drive axle horizontally as far back and to the right side of the vehicle as possible.
NOTE:

If seal is damaged, drive axle must be replaced.

-- Remove bolts -1 to 3- and the transmission support.

-- Remove the transmission support nuts -1, 2 and 3-.

-- Remove the upper bolts -1- for securing the bevel box on the transmission.

NOTE:

Use a swivel joint -2- to remove the bolts.

-- Unbolt the bottom of the bevel box from the transmission -arrows-.

-- Carefully press the bevel box off the transmission and remove it downward.
