Brake Fluid, Changing

WARNING:

High Voltage System Warning Messages:

Working When the Ignition May Not Be On, refer to WORKING WHEN THE IGNITION MAY NOT BE ON .

WARNING:
  • Brake fluid must never come into contact with fluids containing mineral oils (oil, gas, cleaning solutions). Oils containing minerals damage plugs and sleeves on brake systems.
  • Brake fluid is poisonous and must not be extracted by mouth using a hose under any circumstances. In addition, it must not come into contact with paint due to is corrosive effects.
  • Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning that it absorbs moisture from the surrounding air, and must therefore always be stored in air-tight containers.
  • Observe waste disposal regulations!
NOTE:

Use only new Original VW / Audi brake fluid: refer to the Parts Information.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

NOTE:

It is required to remove the wheels for specific tire combinations.

For RHD vehicles, begin with the front right.

Use the bleeder hose delivered with the vehicle. The bleed hose must fit tightly over the bleed screw to prevent air from getting into the brake system.

If there are two bleeder screws (depending on the vehicle equipment) per brake caliper, first connect the inner bleeder screw and then the outer.

The brake fluid level in the reservoir must be high enough so that air cannot get into the brake system.

Do not remove the strainer inside the brake fluid reservoir.

Follow Brake Charger/Bleeder Unit:VAS 5234  operating instructions!

-- Remove brake fluid reservoir cap.

NOTE:

There may also be an additional plug -arrow- for extracting brake fluid, depending on the model.

-- Extract as much brake fluid as possible using intake hose from the brake charger/bleeding unit:VAS 5234  with an installed screen.

Manual Transmission

-- Remove the cap from the clutch slave cylinder bleed valve.

-- Place extractor bleeder hose -1- on clutch slave cylinder bleed valve, open bleed valve and let about 100 ml drain out. Close the bleed valve and install the cap.

-- Operate clutch pedal several times.

All Vehicles

-- Remove caps from the bleed valves.

-- Connect extractor bleeder hose -1- to the left front bleed valve, open the bleed valve and allow about 200 ml to flow out. Close the bleed valve.

-- Repeat work sequence on other side of vehicle at front.

-- Connect extractor bleeder hose -1- to the left rear bleed valve, open the bleed valve and allow about 200 ml to flow out. Close the bleed valve.

-- Repeat procedure on opposite rear.

-- Install cover caps on brake caliper bleed valves.

-- Move filler lever on Brake Charger/Bleeder Unit:VAS 5234  to position -B- (see operating instructions).

-- Remove the filler hose from the adapter.

-- Remove the adapter from the brake fluid reservoir.

-- Install the brake fluid reservoir cap.

-- Check brake fluid level and fill if necessary. BRAKE FLUID, CHECKING BASED ON BRAKE PAD WEAR

-- Check pedal pressure and brake pedal free play. Free play: max 1 /3 of pedal travel
