ATF, Draining And Filling

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Draining

NOTE:

The transmission should be at operating temperature to properly drain the ATF. Do not start the engine when there is either very little or no ATF in the transmission.

-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-. Refer to Noise Insulation, Removing and Installing .

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit:SMN372500  under the transmission.

WARNING:

Danger of eye injury.

  • Wear protective eyewear.

-- Remove the ATF drain plug -arrow B- and drain the ATF.

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the transmission.

  • Do not start the engine when there is no ATF in the transmission.
NOTE:

Follow the disposal requirements.

Replace the ATF drain plug and seal.

Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.

-- Tighten the new drain plug -arrow B-.

ATF, Filling

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the transmission.

  • Only use the ATF available as a replacement part for the automatic transmission 0BK.
  • Using other fluids can cause malfunctions or transmission failure.
  • For the correct allocation. Refer to the Parts Information
  • The ATF filler adapter must be clean. Do not mix the ATF any other fluids.

-- Secure the ATF container and the Oil Filler:VAS6262A  on the vehicle as high as possible; for the correct ATF specification. Refer to the Parts Information

For Vehicles with 12-Cylinder Engine Only

NOTE:

For vehicles with a 12-cylinder engine, the space between the exhaust system and the sealing plug for ATF-check and the fill opening is -A- very small. A different locking bolt with an outer hex head was therefore installed for the ATF check and fill opening.

WARNING:

Danger of getting burned.

  • Wear safety gloves.

-- If necessary, use compressed air as an added means of cooling off both right front exhaust pipes that are near the locking bolt for ATF control and the fill opening, and carefully check the temperature in the front exhaust pipes.

-- Place rags near the ATF-check and fill opening and on top of both right front exhaust pipes that have cooled off.

-- Tighten the new plug -arrow A-.

-- Install the Oil Filler - Jointed Hose:VAS6262/5  into the ATF check and fill hole -arrow-.

NOTE:

For vehicles with 12-cylinder engines: Install the Oil Filler - Jointed Hose:VAS6262/5  on top of both front exhaust gas pipes in the ATF-check and fill opening -arrow-.

-- Fill the ATF using the adapter until the ATF starts to leak out of the check and fill hole.

-- Move the selector lever to "P".

-- Start the engine, wait 20 seconds and then turn it off.

-- Fill the ATF again until it starts to leak out of the hole.

-- Start the engine.

For Vehicles with 12-Cylinder Engine Only

WARNING:

Danger of getting burned.

  • Wear safety gloves.

-- If necessary, use compressed air as an added means of cooling off both right front exhaust pipes that are near the locking bolt for ATF control and the fill opening during the fill process.

All

-- Fill the ATF again using the adapter until the ATF starts to leak out of the check and fill hole.

-- Tighten the old plug for the ATF check and fill hole.

-- While pressing the brake pedal and with the vehicle idling, shift through all the selector lever positions ("P", "R", "N", "D/S") leaving each position engaged for 3 seconds.

-- Move the selector lever to "P".

-- Check the ATF level and correct if necessary. Refer to ATF LEVEL, CHECKING .

NOTE:

Observe all notes and test requirements for "Checking ATF level and correcting".
