Transmission Fluid Level, Checking: Procedure: Notes
NOTE:
Observe general notes, refer to GENERAL INFORMATION .
Follow the rules for clean working conditions, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
Follow all disposal regulations for transmission fluids, refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .
WARNING:
Danger of personal injury.
- The coolant fan can come on by itself, even when the ignition is turned off, for example, caused by heat build-up inside the engine compartment.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.
CAUTION:
Danger of causing damage to the transmission.
- Do not start the engine if there is little or no oil in the transmission due to repair work or severe loss of transmission fluid.
- In this case, fill first with S tronic transmission fluid.
Test Conditions
- Transmission not in emergency operation mode.
- Move the vehicle onto a 4-column workshop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
- The selector level is in "P".
- The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
- Remove the noise insulation -1-, refer to Overview - Noise Insulation
and Noise Insulation, Removing And Installing
.
- Exhaust hose/-hoses of an exhaust extraction system connected.
- Engine running at idle.
- The A/C and the heater are off.
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester is connected, refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
- Transmission fluid temperature 35° to 45 °C (95° to 113 °F).
Read the Transmission Oil Temperature:
NOTE:
The gear oil level changes with the gear oil temperature. Gear oil temperature that is too low leads to overfilling, too high a temperature leads to underfilling.
Overfilling or underfilling will influence the function of the transmission.
