TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): 61 12 00, Date of Issue:  July, 2001
BMW: E31 850CSi with EWS II produced from 01/95 up to 09/95
GROUP: 61 - General Electrical Systems

NOTE: This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 61 12 00 dated October, 2000.

SUBJECT

Premature Battery Discharge on E31/S70 (850CSi)

SITUATION

After an extended period of being out of service (vehicle parked for several days), the vehicle's battery may not maintain an adequate charge level. Consequently, the condition described above can result in a no-start situation.

Also, after the engine is switched off, sporadically the constant humming noise from the EML actuator motors (DK motors) is audible for more than 10 seconds.

CAUSE

Intermittently after the ignition is turned OFF, the DME Control Modules supply a ground signal to the DME Main Relays. That causes the throttle actuator motors (DK motors) to stay active, and eventually to drain the vehicle's battery.

CORRECTION

On a customer complaint basis only, install the Isolation Relay Kit (P/N 99 00 0 002 354) between the circuit of DME1 (DME1 and its Main Relay), and the circuit of DME2 (DME2 and its Main Relay).

PROCEDURE

Follow the installation instructions, which are included in the Isolation Relay Kit (P/N 99 00 0 002 354).

  1. Disconnect the vehicle's batteries. For procedure instruction, please refer to RA 12 00 ... (BMW TIS).
  2. In the engine compartment, locate the splice X8040 (X8040 can be found between the E-Box and the engine, under a plastic covering on the right, rear side of the engine).
  3. Disassemble the splice X8040.
  4. In the E-Box, locate the brown/black/yellow wire from the DME1 Main Relay (pin 4) to splice X8040, and the brown/black/yellow wire from the DME1 (pin 27) to splice X8040. Connect (splice together) those two wires with the yellow wire of the Isolation Relay Kit.
  5. In the E-Box, locate the brown/black/yellow wire from the DME2 Main Relay (pin 4) to splice X8040, and the brown/black/yellow wire from the DME2 (pin number 27) to splice X8040. Connect (splice together) those two wires with the blue wire of the Isolation Relay Kit.
  6. In the E-Box, locate the green/black/yellow wire in the wiring harness of the DME1 (pin 56), and connect it (splice together) to the red wire of the Isolation Relay Kit.
  7. Connect the eyelet ending of the brown wire of the Isolation Relay Kit to the EML module hold-down bolt.
  8. Secure the Isolation Relay in the empty space of the fuel pump relays bracket.
  9. Reconnect batteries.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  In case the Isolation Relay Kit (P/N 99 00 0 002 354) is not available, identical component can be easily assembled using: normally open relay, relay's base, 16 AWG wire, four relay pin connectors according to the following procedure:

  1. Cut for pieces of 16 AWG wire (preferably different colors: yellow, red, blue, and brown) approximately 8 inch. long, and strip off 3 mm insulation from each end.
  2. Double crimp (wire crimp and insulation crimp) at one end of each wire, relay terminal connectors P/N 61 13 1 370 692.
  3. On the other end of the brown wire, double crimp 14-16 AWG ring connector (e.g. AMP 14-16 ring connector; ID=3/8", OD=5/16").
  4. Insert relay terminal connectors into the relay base (P/N 61 36 1 389 113) as follows (Note - Remove the white anti-backout before terminal assembly, and reassemble after the terminals have been installed):
    1. - Blue wire into position 2 of the relay base (terminal 87 of normally open relay output)
    2. - Yellow wire into position 6 of the relay base (terminal 30 of the relay - input)
    3. - Brown wire into position 8 of the relay base (terminal 86 of the relay - ground)
    4. - Red wire into position 4 of the relay base (terminal 85 of the relay - activation signal, positive).
  5. Insert normally open relay (P/N 61 36 1 378 238) into the relay base.
  6. The relay kit is ready for the installation into the vehicle (according to the procedure listed above).
