SERVICE INFORMATION

Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E38 (740i) and E39 (540i) vehicles with N62 engine produced from May 1st, 1997 to August 1st, 1998.

Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as "Open" when checked either in AIR, the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.

SITUATION

Due to DME software error, the following oxygen sensors plausibility fault codes may be stored in DME 5.2.1 control module:

FC 10 - O2 sensor plausibility, Bank 1
FC 12 - O2 sensor rear, plausibility, Bank 1
FC 18 - O2 sensor plausibility, Bank 2
FC 20 - O2 sensor rear, plausibility, Bank 2

Check Engine Light may be illuminated.

CORRECTION

Update the DME software

PROCEDURE

Program and code DME using the latest ISTA version .

The following (or higher) DME Programmed Control Module Numbers should be found after programming:

Model	Target Programmed Control Module Number
E38	7 502 331
E39 automatic transmission	7 502 296
E39 manual transmission	7 502 294
E39 Sport Wagon	7 502 302

The basic DME 5.2.1 Control Module number should be: 12 14 437 284.

Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply ( SI B04 23 10 ).
