M3 OVER-REV CONDITION STORED IN SPEED MEMORY OF THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): 12 07 97, Date of Issue:  June, 1997
BMW: E36 M3 with S52B32 MS 41.2 (from 3/96)
GROUP: 12 - Engine Electrical System

SUBJECT

M3 Over-Rev

SITUATION

Over-rev condition stored in speed memory of the Engine Control Module (DME).

Starting with the production of the S52B32 engine, found in all M3's produced as of March, 1996, it is possible to detect engine over-rev using the DIS tester.

There are three possible conditions that can be stored in the "Speed Memory" of the Engine Control Module:

  1. "No maximum speed has been stored" appears in the "Speed Memory" menu if the DME has not recorded an over-rev condition.
  2. "Maximum engine speed: XXXX rpm" is stored on the "Speed Memory" screen page when the vehicle has exceeded the specified maximum operating engine speed of 7600 rpm.

    Example:

    1. Maximum engine speed: 8160 rpm stored at: 312 h 30 min
  3. "Racing application: detected XX times" will be displayed on the vehicles "Speed Memory", if the maximum engine speed has been exceeded several times or has been sustained for a long period of time.

    Example:

    1. Maximum engine speed: 8160 rpm stored at: 312 h 30 min
    2. Racing application: detected 2 times

IMPORTANT: The "stored at:" time currently reflects the total engine running time stored in the Engine Control Module and should be disregarded.

PROCEDURE

In order to access the over-rev memory of the DME with the DIS:

  1. - Select 1 "Engine Electronics DME/DDE".
  2. - Select 3 "Service functions".
  3. - Select 4 "DME system test".
  4. - Select 8 "Speed memory".

NOTE: If an over-rev condition is recorded, the DME "Speed Memory" cannot be cleared by the DIS tester. If a repair is performed, the following actions must be taken at the time of the repair to clear the "Speed Memory":
  1. - Print out the "Speed Memory" page by selecting "Print Screen" and include this printout with the vehicle repair record.
  2. - Send the Engine Control Module along with the following:
    1. Copy of the "Speed Memory" printout.
    2. Copy of the repair order and description of the work performed.

Via express delivery (Federal Express) to:

    1. BMW of North America, Inc.
    2. Service Engineering
    3. Attn. Rudy Schlimme (M3 Reset)
    4. 1 BMW Plaza
    5. Montvale, NJ 07645

The Engine Control Module "Speed Memory" will be cleared and returned as soon as possible.
