SUBJECT

Intake Boot at Throttle Body 

MODEL

E65 745i

SITUATION

The hose clamp holding the intake boot on the throttle body may loosen allowing the intake boot to pull away from the throttle body. The engine could then draw in unmetered air, which could lead to a loss of power or idle speed fluctuations.

CAUSE

Unfavorable tolerances at intake boot to throttle body connection.

CORRECTION

Check intake boot for damage. Tighten hose clamp to specified torque (3.5 N.m).

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E65 745i vehicles with N62 engines which were produced from start of production to February 1, 2002.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove engine acoustic cover as outlined in repair instructions 13 54 250.
2. Loosen hose clamp at throttle body and separate intake duct from throttle body.
3. Inspect intake boot for damage in clamped area. Replace as necessary.
4. Refit intake boot to throttle body and tighten hose clamp to 3.5 N.m. 
5. Refit engine acoustic cover.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 325.  After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-180) and:

1. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
2. punch out code number 325 printed on the label and,
3. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be through campaign entry.
