New Central Code Structure - Vehicle Order (FA)
SITUATION
E46 vehicles produced from September 2001 have a new central code structure. The familiar ZCS code has been replaced by a new central code structure, which is referred to as the Vehicle Order or FA. In the Vehicle Order, the bit-code format of the ZCS code has been replaced by straightforward text. The stored location of the Vehicle Order is unchanged. It is stored in the Instrument Cluster (Kombi), with redundant storage in the Light Switching Center (LSZ).
The Vehicle Order may be viewed, printed or edited using DIS CD27.0, or later.
PROCEDURE
To display and print the Vehicle Order:
- Using DIS CD27.0 or later, select Coding/Programming
- Select option "3 ZCS Coding"
- Select option "7 E46 Series"
- Select option "3 - Display coding key/vehicle order and save for printing"
- The 7-digit vehicle identification is displayed, followed by the Vehicle Order:
- Model series: Series
- Type description code: Model code
- Time criterion: Vehicle version, in format MMYY (as shown in the DIS "Diagnosis" vehicle identification screen in the box marked "Model Year"
- Paint code: Code number of exterior color
- Upholstery code: Code number of interior equipment
- Assembly no.: Part numbers of programmed DME, DDE and EGS control units
- E word: Additions to the vehicle order (deviations on the vehicle from the standard series status which cannot be defined by optional extras). For example, changed steering ratio associated with a sports package
- HO word: Customer-specific amendments (additions in dealer organization (HO) which cannot be defined by optional extras). This feature is not used at present.
- Option (SA): Option numbers for all optional extras installed.

- Option (SA): 205, 210, 255, 265, 290, 354, 386, 411, 431, 438, 441, 459, 473, 481, 508, 520, 522, 534, 550, 609, 640, 645, 674, 692, 818, 832, 845, 853, 876, 991, 992
- Press the "Print" button (Top left side of screen)
- Press the "Label" button
- A small window opens "Insert label form" - Press the "OK" button
- The Vehicle Order will print on a single sheet of letter size paper
To print the Vehicle order (FA) on a single sheet of letter size paper
To edit the vehicle order:

Changing the Vehicle Order affects vehicle operating characteristics, and must only be performed when directed by an official BMW publication (e.g. Service Information Bulletin, BMW Aftersales Installation Instruction etc..
- Using DIS CD27.0 or later, select Coding/Programming
- Select option "3 ZCS Coding"
- Select option "7 E46 Series"
- Select "1 recoding"
- Select "10 Kombi"
- Select "2 Recode control unit"
- Follow the on-screen prompts to change either VIN, model key, time criterion, paint code or upholstery code.
- To edit either the Assembly no., E word, HO word, or Option (SA):
- To add, select "3 Add feature"
- To delete, select "4 Delete feature"
- Follow the on-screen prompts to make the required changes.
- Select "2 Terminate and check entry" to check the validity of any changes made
- Follow the on-screen prompts to save the changes to memory.
