13 61 501 Replacing control unit (DDE)

IMPORTANT: Read and comply with notes on PROTECTION AGAINST ELECTROSTATIC DAMAGE (ESD PROTECTION) .

Necessary preliminary work:

Switch off ignition.
DISCONNECT BATTERY EARTH LEAD .
Remove MICROFILTER HOUSING .

IMPORTANT: Follow instructions for REMOVING AND INSTALLING CONTROL UNITS

Replacement:

CARRY OUT PROGRAMMING/ENCODING .

IMPORTANT: It is absolutely essential to read out the fault memory with the diagnosis system and produce a fault memory printout.

Switch off ignition.

Lever out expanding rivet.

Remove gasket (1).

Unfasten screws (2).

Feed out partition wall (3) and remove.

Lever out expanding rivet.

Release locks in direction of arrow.

Feed out fresh-air duct (1) and remove.

Open retainers.

Release lock (1) in direction of arrow.

Remove cover (2).

Release screws and remove retaining bracket (1).

Unlock upper section (2) of partition seal in direction of arrow and remove.

Release grommets (3) for wiring harnesses from lower section of partition seal and from electronics box.

Installation note:

Make sure grommets are correctly seated (watertightness).

M57T2 only:

Unlock connectors (1) using slide in direction of arrow and remove.

Remove control unit (2).

Installation note:

Replacement:

Note device identification number and encoding.

Only N57 D30 O/T/S 0/1:

Unlock and detach all plug connections on the DDE control unit (1).

Unlock DDE control unit (1) and remove upwards.

Installation note:

Replacement:

Note device identification number and encoding.

NOTE: If the DDE control unit has been replaced, it will also be necessary to carry out adjustment of the injectors!

The adjustment value (7-position letter/number code) is engraved on each injector.

Read off adjustment value (1) on new injector (2).

NOTE: If injectors have been replaced, "injector characteristic map adjustment" must be performed:

Connect BMW diagnosis system
Identify vehicle
Select "Function selection"
Select "Service functions"
Select "Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE)"
Select "Injectors adjustment"
Select "Test plan"
Start "Service" function with right arrow button.

NOTE: Check stored fault messages.
Clear diagnostic fault entries from fault memory.
Reassemble the vehicle.
