| In the event of a discharged battery, an engine can be switched on by means of the battery of another vehicle using two jump leads.
WARNING:
Use jump leads with fully insulated terminal clamps only. Do not touch live parts. Danger to life!. Vehicles with hybrid drive cannot give starting aid. The owner's handbook contains important information and detailed instructions for starting aid. Observe the instructions in the Owner's Handbook! Preparation:
- Check whether the battery of the other vehicle generates a voltage of 12 V. Details can be found on the battery.
- Switch off the engine of the donor vehicle.
- Switch off electrical consumers in both vehicles.
There must not be any bodywork contact between the two vehicles, as this may cause a risk of shorting. |
Connecting jump leads The positive terminal of the battery or the place inside engine compartment to be used for the starting aid is marked with a red cover. The body ground or a special nut inside the engine compartment can be used as negative terminal of the battery. Position of the starting aid base, see |
- Engine compartment overview
Observe sequence when connecting the jump leads. Otherwise, danger of injury is present due to sparking.
- To prevent the central locking system from locking inadvertently, the driver's door is to be opened prior to connecting the jump leads.
- Uncover positive terminal of battery respectively the place to be used for starting aid.
- Connect a terminal clamp of the positive jump lead to the positive terminal of the battery respectively to the place to be used for starting aid of the donor vehicle.
- Connect second battery post clip of positive jump lead to positive battery terminal or corresponding starting aid connection point of vehicle to be started.
- Connect a terminal clamp of the negative jump lead to the negative terminal of the battery respectively to the corresponding engine ground or body ground of the donor vehicle.
- Connect second battery post clip of negative jump lead to negative battery terminal or corresponding engine or body ground of vehicle to be started.
|
Start engine Do not use any starting spray to start the engine.
- Start the donor vehicle engine and let it run at increased idle speed for a few minutes. If the vehicle to be started is equipped with a diesel engine: Let the engine of the donor vehicle run for approximately 10 minutes.
- Start the engine of the other vehicle as usual.
In case the attempt to start the engine was not successful, wait a few minutes before trying again in order to allow the discharged battery to drain current.
- Have both engines run for a few minutes.
- Disconnect the jump leads in reverse sequence.
