Engine Electrical System Diagnostic System Check

  1. Perform battery testing and inspection. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If battery does not pass test, replace battery. If battery passes test, go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on lower left side of instrument panel, near steering column. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
    3. NOTE: If using Tech 2 scan tool, obtain information using CLASS 2 MESSAGE MONITOR feature.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with each module on class 2 serial data circuit. If scan tool communicates with each module, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with each module, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
    4. NOTE: If using Tech 2 scan tool, use CLASS 2 DTC CHECK feature in order to determine which modules have DTCs set.
  4. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCs function for each module. Record all displayed DTCs, DTC status, and module which set DTC. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, repair concern by symptom. See appropriate STARTERS or GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  5. If scan tool does not display any DTCs beginning with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs beginning with "U", go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  6. If scan tool displays DTCs B1000, B1007 or B1009, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If scan tool does not display DTCs B1000, B1007 or B1009, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
