| Condition | In addition to having a DTC P0336 set, a vehicle may exhibit any or all of the following: Tachometer inoperative/erratic, engine extended crank before starting or a crank no start condition. |
| Cause | Possible damaged crankshaft reluctor. |
CORRECTION
If SI diagnostics has not led to a resolution, try the following:
If the vehicle has an extended crank/crank no start condition, disconnect the Crankshaft Position Sensor electrical connector and verify the engine will start normally.
If now starting normally or no previous starting conditions were present (only DTC P0336 and/or tach inoperative), remove the Crankshaft Position Sensor and inspect the entire crankshaft reluctor thoroughly for any damage.
It only takes a small amount of damage to the crankshaft reluctor such as a ding or small dent to cause this issue, thorough inspection is recommended.
It has been found that crankshaft reluctor damage can occur from foreign materials in the oil pan/crankcase such as pieces from a broken timing chain guide (from either a current condition or previous repair) identify source of foreign material and repair as needed.
This issue is currently under review and this PI will be updated to a Bulletin or incorporated into Service Information diagnostics.
