PASS Key System

For "No Crank" or "No Start" condition try the following checks before doing the System Check. For inoperative or continuously operating horn alarm, see UNIVERSAL THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM  .

  1. Check the key pellet sensing contacts in the ignition lock cylinder by looking into the key opening. If the contacts are damaged, replace the lock cylinder.
  2. Check the fuse feeding the battery input of the PASS Key decoder module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  3. Check the fuse feeding the ignition input of the PASS Key decoder module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Check owner's ignition key using the J35628 interrogator or equivalent. See SPECIAL TOOLS  . If the key code window shows "E", replace the owner' key.

PASSKEY SYSTEM CHECK

Action Normal Result
With Both Doors Closed, Put Ignition Switch In RUN. (1) THEFT SYSTEM ARMED Indicator Lights For 2 Seconds Then Goes Off. No Theft Deterrent messages Are Displayed On The CCDIC.
Turn Ignition Switch to START (2) Engine Starts
Shut Off Engine. Remove Hush Panel Under Steering Column & Disconnect C208 (2 Cavity Connector At Base Of Steering Column). Connect J35628 Interrogator Between Both Halves Of C208. Set The Key Code Selector On The J35628 To An Incorrect Resistance Value. Go to next step. .....
Attempt To Start Engine. (3) Engine Should Not Crank. THEFT SYSTEM ARMED indicator should stay on, indicating an incorrect key code. "Starting Disabled..." message should be disabled on the CCDIC.
Disconnect The J35628 Interrogator. Reconnect C208 & Attempt To Start Engine Again. Must Be Done Within 2 Minutes Of First Attempt. (4) Engine Should Not Crank.
Turn Ignition Switch To OFF. Wait Four Minutes & Turn Ignition Switch To Start. Engine Starts Normally
(1) It is normal for the THEFT SYSTEM ARMED indicator to remain on during the first ignition cycle when a new PASS Key decoder module has been installed.
(2) If engine does not start see PERSONAL AUTOMOTIVE SECURITY SYSTEM  under SYSTEM TESTS.
(3) If engine cranks, enter diagnostics and check for code E058. If set, see SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If E058 is not set, continue with diagnosis.
(4) If engine cranks, replace the PASS Key decoder module.
