Fuel System Cleaning

WARNING: Wear safety glasses when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.
NOTE: The following procedure covers the disassembly and the inspection of the complete fuel supply system. If the fuel system is contaminated, the fuel system can be cleaned. You can usually determine extent of fuel system contamination during disassembly.
NOTE: When flushing fuel tank, handle fuel and water mixture as a hazardous material. Handle fuel and water mixture in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  1. Remove in-line fuel filter. See FUEL FILTER  . Inspect fuel system for contamination of in-line fuel filter. Replace filter after cleaning fuel lines if filter is plugged or contaminated.
  2. Remove fuel pump/sender assemblies. See FUEL PUMP/SENDER ASSEMBLY  . Locate tank in a suitable work area away from any heat, flame, or any other source of ignition.
  3. Perform the following procedures:
    • Inspect fuel sender strainer. Replace primary fuel tank module if strainer is contaminated.
    • Inspect secondary fuel tank module for debris. Clean secondary fuel tank module if debris is found.
    • Use compressed air in order to apply air pressure to the transfer tube.
  4. Flush fuel tank with running hot water for at least 5 minutes. Pour water out of fuel sender assembly opening. Rock tank in order to ensure that removal of water from tank is complete.
  5. Disconnect return hose/pipe and feed hose/pipe quick connect fittings from fuel rail. See Figure . See FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS  .
  6. Use compressed air in order to apply air pressure to the fuel lines in the opposite direction from the normal fuel flow.
