Intake Plenum: Removal

NOTE: It may be necessary to remove Engine Control Module (ECM) from bracket to gain access to ECM bracket to intake plenum bolts. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE  under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. It may be necessary to loosen ECM bracket-to-cylinder head bolt for installation of ECM bracket to intake plenum bolts.
  1. Remove intake plenum air inlet hose clamps and hoses from throttle body. See Figure . Disconnect fuel pressure regulator atmospheric vent tube from bottom of throttle body.
  2. Remove bolts securing throttle body to intake plenum. See Figure . Remove throttle body from intake plenum and crankcase vent adapter, allowing it to be supported by throttle body inlet heater hose. Remove throttle body "O" ring seals.
  3. Remove 3 bolts securing crankcase vent adapter to intake plenum. See Figure . Lift crankcase vent adapter from intake plenum, and position aside.
  4. Disconnect crankcase ventilation dirty air hose retainer from fuel pipe. Remove remote power steering reservoir mounting bolts and position aside. See Figure .
  5. Disconnect electrical connector and vacuum hoses from intake manifold tuning valve solenoid at rear of the plenum. See Figure . Remove throttle body inlet hose/pipe-to-intake plenum bolt. Disconnect vacuum brake booster hose from vacuum source.
  6. Remove 2 bolts securing Engine Control Module (ECM) bracket to the intake plenum. Remove intake plenum bolt caps. See Figure . Remove intake plenum bolts. Lift intake plenum from intake manifold. Remove intake plenum "O" ring seals. Mask off open ports to intake manifold, in order to prevent foreign objects from entering engine.
  7. Clean intake plenum in solvent, removing all sludge and varnish. Clean intake plenum sealing surfaces. Inspect for chipped or cracked sealing flanges and stripped or damaged thread holes. Replace intake plenum as necessary.
