Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform battery inspection test. See BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION  under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. If problem exists, repair as necessary. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Install a scan tool. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Does the scan tool power up? If yes, go to next step. If no, perform appropriate scan tool test. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. NOTE: The engine may start during the following step. Turn OFF the engine as soon as you have observed the Crank power mode.
  4. Access the Class 2 Power Mode in the Diagnostic Circuit Check on the scan tool. Rotate the ignition switch through all positions while observing the Class 2 Power Mode parameter. Does the ignition switch parameter reading match the ignition switch position for all switch positions? If yes, go to next step. If no, see appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  5. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Attempt to communicate with each of the following modules on the Class 2 serial data circuit:
    • Amplifier (AMP).
    • Dash Integration Module (DIM).
    • Driver's Door Module (DIM).
    • Heads Up Display (HUD).
    • Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).
    • Instrument Panel Module (IPM).
    • Memory Seat Module Navigation Display Head (NDH).
    • Navigation Module (NAV).
    • Navigation Radio (NRC).
    • OnStar (ONS).
    • Radio Module (IRC).
    • Remote Function Actuator (RFA).
    • Rear Integration Module (RIM).
    • Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    • Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR).
    • Tilt Telescope Module (TTM).
    • Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD).

    Does the scan tool communicate with all modules on the Class 2 serial data circuit? If yes, go to next step. If no, see appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.

  6. Select the Display DTCs function for each module. If using a Tech 2 scan tool, use the Class 2 DTC Check feature in order to determine which modules have DTCs set. Record all of the displayed DTCs, DTC status, and module which set the DTC. Does scan tool display any DTCs? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to SYSTEM TESTS  .
  7. Does scan tool display any DTCs which begin with a "U"? If yes, see appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If no, go to next step.
  8. If scan tool displays DTCs B1000, B1004, B1007, or B1009, repair these DTCs first. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If scan tool does not display DTCs B1000, B1004, B1007 or B1009, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTCs retrieved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
