Pinion Clearance Check: Notes
Connect 12-volt battery leads to solenoid "S" switch and to ground. Flash a jumper lead from "MOT" or "M" terminal to starter frame, shifting pinion into cranking position until battery is disconnected. Push pinion away from stop retainer as far as possible. Using feeler gauge, check for 0.010 - 0.140" clearance between pinion and retainer. See Fig 1 .
NOTE:
Pinion clearance is not adjustable. If clearance is not within specifications, motor must be disassembled and checked for defects.
