Steering Gear: Disassembly
- Clamp steering gear assembly in a soft-jawed vise. Disconnect tie rod ends from tie rods. Remove retainer rings from rubber boots. Remove rubber boots.
- Remove tie rod adjusting screw lock nut, adjusting screw, thrust spring and bearing shell from adjusting screw opening. Using a chisel, turn up staked section of rack to disconnect tie rod ball joint assemblies from rack.
- Remove oil seal and retaining ring. Pull pinion shaft and rack from steering gear housing. Disconnect right and left hydraulic lines from cylinder and gear housing.
- Rotate pinion shaft until the flat on the splines is parallel to the steering rack. Measure the length of rack protruding from gear housing. Note this measurement for reassembly.
- Remove valve housing. Using a small drift, remove right side retaining ring. Pull rack assembly right side and seal holder as a unit. Using Drift (J-7079-2) and Extension (J-35527), drive inner rack seal and shock damping ring from cylinder.
- Remove piston and "O" ring seals from rack. Using a soft mallet, drive pinion shaft/valve assembly from gear housing. Using Drift (J-33997), drive bearing and seal from valve housing.
- Remove snap ring from spool end of pinion shaft/valve assembly. Remove slide spool, seals and spacer from pinion shaft. DO NOT remove teflon seals.
