Steering Gear: Reassembly

NOTE: Lubricate all parts with power steering fluid before reassembly. Always use new seals, rubber boots and "O" rings.
  1. Install spacer onto pinion shaft. Using Seal Installer (J-33997-7), install oil seal (flat side facing spacer) onto pinion shaft. See Fig 1 .
  2. Using Seal Ring Compressor (J-33997-5), install spool onto pinion shaft. Install spool retaining snap ring. Using Seal Ring Compressor (J-33997-4) and press, install upper bearing and seal into valve housing.

  3. Using Seal Ring Compressor (J-33997-8), compress seal rings on valve housing. Using Seal Ring Compressor (J-33997-10), install pinion shaft/valve assembly into valve housing.
  4. Install seal onto steering rack piston. Using Seal Ring Compressor (J-33997-6), compress rack piston seal. Lubricate steering rack and rack teeth with grease.
  5. Using Seal Installer (J-33997-9), install seal holder assembly. Using Sizing Adapter (J-35527) and Extension (J-7079-2), install shock damping ring. Using shim stock to protect inner rack seal from rack teeth, install inner rack seal to gear box side of cylinder.

  6. Install rack assembly. Push seal holder into housing. Install retaining ring. Move rack assembly into cylinder as far as possible. Measure distance between the end of seal holder and end of steering rack.
  7. Measurement should be at least .394" (10 mm). If not, check positioning of seals. When correct positioning is found, adjust clearance between valve assembly and housing. Refer to ADJUSTMENTS  in this article.
  8. Install right and left hydraulic lines. Tighten fittings to 14 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Install inner tie rods, with new lock washers, to steering rack ends. Torque tie rods to 65 ft. lbs. (88 N.m). Stake lock washers.
  9. Grease small opening of rubber boots. Install rubber boots over tie rods. Install boot clamps. Install tie rod end lock nuts. Install tie rod ends. Adjust tie rod length to 7.5" (190.4 mm). Tighten tie rod lock nut to 40 ft. lbs. (54 N.m).
