Tachometer Inaccurate

  1. Disconnect 6-pin Ignition Control Module connector located in left front of engine compartment (V6), or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector located in engine compartment, to rear of right shock tower (V8). Use IPC Tester (J-33431) with 10-pin connector (J-33431-10). On V6, connect tester to connector C1 terminal "C" (White wire) and ground. On V8, connect tester to connector "A" terminal No. 13 (White wire) and ground.
  2. Set tester to 60 Hz (54 MPH). Turn ignition on. If tachometer does not indicate about 1200 RPM for V6, or 900 RPM for V8, check for an open circuit, short to ground or voltage in White wire. If circuit is okay, replace instrument cluster.
  3. If tachometer does indicate about 1200 RPM for V6, or 900 RPM for V8, check for poor connection at ignition control module (V6) or PCM (V8). If connection is okay, replace ignition control module or PCM as necessary.
