Shift Cable: Removal
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the shift select cable from the Throttle Valve (T.V.) cable guide bracket. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
- Remove 6 bolts and the left splash shield from the vehicle. Remove the nut, lock washer, and the shift select cable (1) from the manual lever (2). Lower the vehicle. See Figure .
- Remove the E-clip and remove the shift select cable from the shift select cable bracket. Remove the 2 bolts and the outer shift select cable grommet retainer from the bulkhead.
- Remove the rack and pinion and the upper power steering hose. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate POWER RACK & PINION article in STEERING.
- Remove the heat shield. Remove the center console. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEMS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
- Remove the shift select cable (2) from the gearshift lever assembly. See Figure . Remove the shift select cable (1) from the manual selector base (2). See Figure . Remove the carpet retainer from the carpet retaining bracket (1) and pull back the carpet (2) from the floor under the instrument panel compartment.
- Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Remove 2 bolts (1) from the inner shift select cable grommet retainer (2). See Figure . Remove the shift select cable from the vehicle through passenger compartment side of bulkhead. Inspect the shift select cable for kinks, fraying, or excessive wear. Replace as necessary.
