Exhaust System Backpressure
NOTE:
When performing exhaust system backpressure test, ensure transmission is in Neutral or Park. Accurate readings cannot be obtained unless vehicle remains in Neutral or Park.
- Perform OBD system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
- Remove HO2S1 from exhaust manifold. Install Exhaust Backpressure Tester (J-35314-A) in place of HO2S1. After tester is installed, go to next step.
- Start engine. Monitor pressure reading on tester with engine idling in Park or Neutral. If pressure is 1.25 psi or less, go to next step. If pressure is greater than 1.25 psi, go to step 5 .
- Increase engine speed to 2500 RPM and monitor pressure reading on tester. If pressure is greater than 1.25 psi, go to next step. If pressure is 1.25 psi or less, go to step 7 .
- Check entire exhaust system for collapsed pipe, heat distress or possible internal muffler failure. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 7 . If exhaust system is okay, go to next step.
- Replace catalytic converter. After repairs, go to next step.
- Allow engine to idle until normal operating temperature is obtained. Check for DTCs. If no DTCs are set, system is okay. If DTCs are set, perform appropriate diagnostic procedure for DTC set. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
