Cruise Control Inoperative

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect cruise control servo harness connector. Remove cruise control servo cap. Loosen cruise control servo cable lock nut. Remove cruise control servo cable from cruise control servo. While observing movement, rotate cruise control servo lever counterclockwise and release. Cruise control servo lever should rotate counterclockwise approximately 120° and return to normal position when released. If cruise control servo lever operates as specified, go to next step. If cruise control servo lever does not operate as specified, go to step  20 .
  3. Attempt to rotate cruise control servo lever clockwise from normal position. If cruise control servo lever rotates clockwise, go to step  20 . If cruise control servo lever does not rotate clockwise, go to next step.
  4. Reconnect cruise control servo cable to cruise control servo. Check cruise control servo cable adjustment. See CRUISE CONTROL SERVO CABLE  under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust cruise control servo cable as necessary and retest operation. If cruise control servo cable adjustment is okay, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect cruise control servo harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, backprobe cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 12 (Blue/Black wire). See Figure . See CRUISE CONTROL SERVO CONNECTOR TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION  table. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  13 .
  6. Ensure cruise control servo harness connector is disconnected and ignition switch is in ON position. Using test light connected to ground, backprobe cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 6 (Yellow/Green wire). Depress and release brake pedal while observing test light. Test light should illuminate when brake pedal is released. Test light should not illuminate when brake pedal is depressed. If test light illuminates as specified, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate as specified, go to step  14 .
  7. Ensure cruise control servo harness connector is disconnected. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, backprobe cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 2 (Green/White wire). Depress and release brake pedal while observing test light. Test light should illuminate when brake pedal is depressed. Test light should not illuminate when brake pedal is released. If test light illuminates as specified, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate as specified, go to step  14 .
  8. Ensure cruise control servo harness connector is disconnected and ignition switch is in ON position. Connect test light (backprobe) between cruise control servo harness connector terminals No. 11 (Black wire) and No. 12 (Blue/Black wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  16 .
  9. Ensure cruise control servo harness connector is disconnected and ignition switch is in ON position. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 8 (Light Green wire). Observe voltage reading while depressing cruise control main switch to ON position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  17 .
  10. Ensure cruise control servo harness connector is disconnected. Connect DVOM between cruise control servo harness connector terminals No. 5 (Black/Yellow wire) and No. 8 (Light Green wire). Observe resistance of cruise control functional switch while switching to specific positions. See CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTIONAL SWITCH RESISTANCE  table. If cruise control functional switch resistance is as specified, go to next step. If cruise control functional switch resistance is not as specified, go to step  18 .
    CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTIONAL SWITCH RESISTANCE

    Switch Position Resistance (Ohms)
    Cancel 0-0.50
    Set/Coast 220-240
    Resume/Accel 900-920
  11. If vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, move shift lever to any position other than Park or Neutral. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ground and cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 9 (Black/Red wire). If continuity exists, go to step  19 . If continuity does not exist, go to step  20 .
  12. Ensure clutch pedal is fully released. Check for continuity between ground and cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 9 (Blue wire). If continuity exists, go to step  19 . If continuity does not exist, go to step  20 .
  13. Repair open in Blue/Black wire between cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 12 and main relay connector terminal No. 2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest operation.
  14. Check brakelight switch adjustment. See BRAKELIGHT SWITCH  under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust brakelight switch as necessary. Retest operation. If brakelight switch adjustment is okay, go to next step.
  15. Repair open or short to voltage in brakelight switch wiring. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest operation.
  16. Repair open in Black wire between cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 11 and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest operation.
  17. Repair open in Light Green wire between cruise control main switch harness connector terminal No. 5 and cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 8. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest operation.
  18. Check for open or short to ground in Light Green wire between cruise control functional switches harness connector terminal No. 3 and cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 8. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest operation. If wiring is okay, replace cruise control functional switch. See CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTIONAL SWITCHES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  19. On vehicles equipped with A/T, repair short to ground in Black/Red wire between cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 9 and transmission range switch harness connector terminal No. 3. On vehicles equipped with M/T, repair short to ground in Blue wire between cruise control servo harness connector terminal No. 9 and clutch control release switch harness connector terminal No. 2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest operation.
  20. Replace cruise control servo. See CRUISE CONTROL SERVO  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest operation.
