Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check
- Verify battery is fully charged. If battery is fully charged, go to next step. If battery is not fully charged, charge as necessary and recheck system operation.
- Connect scan tool to DLC located under steering column. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Turn ignition on. Attempt to establish communication with each module on class 2 serial data circuit. If scan tool communicates with all modules on class 2 serial data circuit, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all modules on class 2 serial data circuit, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Select display DTCs function for each module. Record displayed DTCs, DTC status and module which set DTC. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, repair engine electrical system by symptom. See appropriate STARTERS or GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTERS & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
- Check for communication DTCs. These DTCs will begin with "U". If no "U" DTCs exist, go to next step. If any "U" DTC exists, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS.
- If DTC B1000 is set, go to DTC B1000: ECU MALFUNCTION under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. If DTC B1000 is not set, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See appropriate STARTERS or GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTERS & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
