Test A: Starter Solenoid Does Not Click

  1. Perform visual check of system. Ensure all electrical connections are clean and tight, and system fuses are okay. Ensure battery is fully charged. If visual check is complete, go to next step.
  2. Connect DVOM between starter solenoid "S" terminal (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. Place gear selector in Park or Neutral (A/T). Turn ignition switch to START position. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  4.
  3. Replace starter. See STARTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If replacement is complete, operate system to verify problem has been corrected.
  4. Connect DVOM to ground and backprobe Black/Yellow wire terminal of CPP or PNP switch. Place gear selector in Park or Neutral (A/T). Turn ignition switch to START position. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  6.
  5. Repair open in Black/Yellow wire between CPP or PNP switch and starter solenoid. If repair is complete, operate system to verify problem has been corrected.
  6. Connect DVOM to ground and backprobe Black/Red wire terminal of CPP or PNP switch. Place gear selector in Park or Neutral (A/T). Turn ignition switch to START position. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  8.
  7. Replace CPP or PNP switch. If replacement is complete, operate system to verify problem has been corrected.
  8. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe underhood junction block connector No. C1 terminal No. 6 (Black/Red wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Place gear selector in Park or Neutral (A/T). Turn ignition switch to START position. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  10.
  9. Repair open in Black/Red wire between junction block and CPP or PNP switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If repair is complete, operate system to verify problem has been corrected.
  10. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe junction block connector C1 terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Turn ignition switch to START position. If battery voltage is present, go to step  14. If battery voltage is not present, go to next step.
  11. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe junction block connector C1 terminal No. 3 (White/Green wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Turn ignition switch to START position. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  13.
  12. Replace ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If replacement is complete, operate system to verify problem has been corrected.
  13. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe junction block connector C7 terminal No. 1 (White/Green wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  15.
  14. Replace junction block. If replacement is complete, operate system to verify problem has been corrected.
  15. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe fuse box connector C4 terminal No. 1 (White/Green wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  17.
  16. Repair open in White/Green wire between junction block connector C7 terminal No. 1 and fuse box. If repair is complete, operate system to verify problem has been corrected.
  17. Replace fuse box. If repair is complete, operate system to verify problem has been corrected.
