- If diagnostic system check was not performed, go to ENGINE ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. If diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step.
- Start engine. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel, near steering column. Using scan tool, observe Ignition 0 parameter in Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) data list. If scan tool indicates voltage is less than 12.6 volts, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate voltage is less than 12.6 volts, go to SYMPTOM INDEX table.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect a charging system tester to battery. Follow manufacturer instructions. Operate engine with engine speed at 2500 RPM. Adjust carbon pile as necessary in order to obtain maximum current output. If generator output is 77-97 amps, go to step 9 . If generator output is not 77-97 amps, go to next step.
- Maintain engine speed at 2500 and continue to operate generator at 87.5 amps. Measure voltage drop between generator output terminal and battery positive terminal. If voltage drop is greater than 0.5 volt, go to step 6 . If voltage drop is less than 0.5 volt, go to next step.
- Maintain engine speed at 2500 and continue to operate generator at 87.5 amps. Measure voltage drop between battery negative terminal and generator metal housing. If voltage drop is greater than 0.5 volt, go to step 7 . If voltage drop is less than 0.5 volt, go to step 8 .
- Test battery positive circuit between generator output terminal and battery positive terminal for a high resistance. Repair circuit as necessary, then go to step 9 . If high resistance was not found, go to next step.
- Repair high resistance in ground circuit between generator housing and battery negative terminal. Go to step 9 .
- Replace generator. See GENERATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Once replacement is complete, go to next step.
- Retest system to verify repair. If condition was corrected, system is okay. If condition was not corrected, go to step 3 .
