Installation Procedure

Position the steering column in the vehicle.
Insert the lower end of the steering column shaft into the intermediate steering shaft coupling. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
Pull the intermediate shaft seal up over the lower column in order to lock the seal into place.
Connect the steering column electrical connectors.
Install the transaxle casing to the shift cam ball stud.
If equipped with a column shift lever, install the park/lock cable to the ignition switch.
CAUTION: When installing the steering column to the intermediate shaft, make sure that the shaft is seated prior to pinch bolt installation. If the bolt is inserted into the coupling before shaft installation, the two mating shafts may disengage.
Loosely install the upper and lower steering column fasteners.
CAUTION: In order to ensure the intended function of the steering column in a vehicle during a crash and in order to avoid personal injury to the driver, perform the following:
- Tighten the steering column lower fasteners before you tighten the steering column upper fasteners. Failure to do this can damage the steering column.
- Tighten the steering column fasteners to the specified torque. Overtightening the upper steering column fasteners could affect the steering column collapse.
Tighten the steering column fasteners in the following sequence:
1. Right side lower bolt
2. Left side lower bolt
3. Left side upper nut
4. Right side upper nut
Tighten the fasteners in sequence to 24 N.m (18 ft lbs).
Install the steering column knee bolster.
Install the trim panel below the steering column.
Install the left instrument panel insulator.
Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
Install the SIR inflator module. Refer to AIR BAG MODULES .
Connect the negative battery cable.
Enable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
Inspect all of the steering column components for correct operation.
