Installation Procedure

  1. Raise the transmission into place while simultaneously installing the fluid indicator tube.
  2. Remove the J 21366 .
  3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.

    The torque converter must rotate freely by hand.

    NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  4. Install transmission studs and bolt.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt/studs to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install the lower right transmission stud and bolt.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt/stud to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  6. Install the fuel feed/return and EVAP return pipe bracket nut.

    Tighten:  Tighten the nut to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).

  7. Remove the plugs from the transmission oil cooler line fittings.
  8. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Line Quick Connect Fitting .

  9. If reusing the torque converter bolts, clean the bolt threads and apply Loctite 242 GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489), or equivalent to the threads prior to installation.
  10. Install the torque converter bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).

  11. Install the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

  12. Connect the VSS electrical connector (2).
  13. Connect the main electrical connector (1).

  14. Connect the PNP switch electrical connectors (2).
  15. Install the harness clip (1) to the fuel line bracket.

  16. Install the exhaust hanger bracket and bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).

  17. Install the cable to the bracket.
  18. Install the range selector cable end (2) to the transmission range selector lever ball stud (1).

  19. Ensure the transmission manual shaft is positioned in mechanical park.
  20. Install the retainer that secures the cable to the bracket.

  21. Install the transmission mount and bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  22. Install the transfer case, if equipped. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
  23. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L Engines) or Starter Motor Replacement (8.1L Engine) in Engine Electrical.
  24. Install the exhaust pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement (6.0L and 8.1L Engines) in Engine Exhaust.

  25. Raise the transmission slightly and install the transmission support.
  26. Install the transmission support bolts/nuts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts/nuts to 95 N.m (70 lb ft).

  27. Install the transmission mount nuts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the nuts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  28. Remove the support from the transmission.
  29. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Rear in Propeller Shaft.
  30. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.
  31. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON® III transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure .
