Removal Procedure

WARNING:

When carrying a live inflator module, make sure the bag opening is pointed away from you. This minimizes the chance of injury in the case of an accidental deployment. Never carry the inflator module by the wires. Never carry the inflator module by the connector on the underside of the module.

Make sure that the bag and trim cover are facing up whenever you place a live inflator module on any surface. This is necessary to provide a free space for the bag to expand in the unlikely event of accidental deployment.

Never rest the steering column assembly on the steering wheel with the inflator module face down and the column vertical. This may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Refer to SIR Warning .
NOTE: It is difficult to remove the air bag module without cutting the air bag brackets or air bag module hooks. This could cause the replacement of the air bag module and the IP trim together. Follow this procedure to avoid the unwanted part replacement.
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
  2. Remove the instrument panel upper trim panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel Replacement .
  3. Remove the instrument panel inflatable restraint module bolts (1).

  4. When replacing the instrument panel with new one, follow the step 8-9.
  5. When replacing the passenger air bag module with new one, follow the step 10-11.
  6. When cutting the air bag bracket (1) of IP, choose the thinner side of the bracket and cut it along a dotted line. Refer to the upper graphic.
    NOTE: Do not hit the air bag bracket and the air bag module with a hammer when cutting the air bag bracket.

  7. Remove the passenger air bag module from the air bag bracket of IP.
  8. Insert the flat tip driver (3) in between the airbag bracket (2) and the air bag module hook (1) and then gently tilt the driver until breaking the hooks (1).

    NOTE: When breaking the hooks (1), choose the thinner side of the hook and break it. Refer to the upper graphic.
  9. Remove the passenger air bag module (1) from the air bag bracket of IP.
