Installation Procedure

    Power Steering Assist Motor Seal (1) @ Power Steering Assist Motor - Install NEW

    CAUTION:

    Fastener Caution .

    Steering Gear Bolt (1) - Install NEW and tighten [4x] - Fastener Specifications

    Connect the electrical connectors. (1)

  5. Using a digital scale, weigh the NEW electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear belt. Record the weight and use the chart to determine the tension of the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear belt. Refer to the Belt Tension Table  for proper belt tension specification.

    NOTE:

    With the steering linkage inner tie rods removed, there is no stop on the end of the steering rack travel.

    Install an appropriate tool (1) on the input shaft (2) and rotate the input shaft as close to end to end travel as possible 3 times to manually break in the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear belt.

  8. Ensure the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear rotates freely.

    Move the steering rack to centered position. The center position can be found by taking a measurement of the distance (a) from the end of the steering gear housing to the end of the steering gear rack (1). This measurement should be 61.1 mm (2.4 in).

    To adjust the belt tension, loosen the steering gear idler pulley (4) and use the tool installed to adjust the belt tension as necessary. Tighten the steering gear idler pulley (4) when taking measurements.

  11. Install the CH-53104  Steering Gear Idler Pulley Holder (2).
  12. Install and tighten the 2 steering gear bolts (3) that were saved from the removal steps.
  13. NOTE:

    Install a rubber pad to the tightening surface to prevent damage to the idler pulley.

  14. Install an appropriate sized C-clamp (1) with a rubber pad on the tightening surface to tighten the steering gear idler pulley to the correct specification.
  15. NOTE:

    NEVER hold the tester by hand while taking measurements or the readings will be inaccurate.

  16. Place the body of the GE-50576-A  Acoustic Belt Tension Tester on a flat surface.

    Position the microphone of the GE-50576-A  Acoustic Belt Tension Tester (1) at the outboard location of the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear belt (2).

  18. CAUTION:

    Never use a sharp object to strum the belt as belt damage may occur. If the belt is damaged, the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear will need to be replaced.

    NOTE:

    Strum the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear belt as close as possible to the center position between the two electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear pulleys to achieve the most accurate readings.

  19. Use an allen wrench or finger to strum the steering gear belt at the center location between the two pulleys three times to get an average belt tension reading.
  20. NOTE:

    When testing frequency, there should be a difference of 10 - 40 Hz between the inboard and outboard measurements. If you are not seeing a difference in the measurements, rotate the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear 90 degrees and try again.

  21. Record the average reading from the outboard frequency test.

    Position the microphone of the GE-50576-A  Acoustic Belt Tension Tester (1) at the inboard location of the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear belt (2).

  23. Use an allen wrench or finger to strum the steering gear belt at the center location between the two pulleys three times to get an average belt tension reading.
  24. Record the average reading from the inboard frequency test.
  25. NOTE:

    Increasing the belt tension increases the frequency. Reducing the belt tension reduces the frequency.

  26. Find the average of the inboard and outboard measurements and compare to the chart. If the frequency is within specification, continue. If not, repeat steps 14 - 20 until accurate frequency specification is achieved.
  27. Apply the final torque for the steering gear idler pulley before removing the tools. Fastener Specifications 
  28. Remove the C-clamp used to tighten the idler pulley.
  29. Confirm the inboard and outboard measurements are still within specification. If not, repeat steps 15 - 21 until accurate frequency specification is achieved.
  30. Remove the GE-50576-A  Acoustic Belt Tension Tester.
  31. Remove and DISCARD the 2 steering gear bolts used during the belt tension procedure.
  32. Remove the CH-53104  Steering Gear Idler Pulley Holder.

  35. Steering Gear Bolt (1) - Install NEW and tighten [6x] - Fastener Specifications

    Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod - Left Side and Right Side (1) - Install [2x]

    CAUTION:

    Holding the steering gear rack bar with anything other than a non-serrated adjustable wrench will cause damage to the steering gear.

    Cover the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear bar (2) with a clean shop towel.

  38. Hold the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear bar (2) with a non-serrated adjustable wrench.
  39. Using a universal inner tie rod wrench, tighten the left and right side steering linkage inner tie rods (1). Fastener Specifications

    Position a NEW left and right side steering gear boot clamp-inner (1) on the left and right side steering gear boots (2).

    Install the left and right side steering linkage inner tie rod nuts (2) until aligned with the previously placed matched mark on the steering linkage inner tie rod.

  45. Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod - Left Side and Right Side (1) - Install [2x]

    Intermediate Steering Shaft (2) - Install

  47. If a NEW threaded component is being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded component is reused, prepare the threaded component using the following steps:
    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the component using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned component into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Remove loose debris from internal and external threads using compressed air.
    4. Apply liquid thread locking adhesive in a strip along half of the length of the external threads, starting at the tip, just prior to installation. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    With aid of an assistant install the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear (3).

  67. Install the front cradle assembly. Front Cradle Removal and Installation (FE2) , or Front Cradle Removal and Installation (F47)
  68. Run all necessary programming and setup procedures. Control Module References
