Ignition Timing

NOTE: Always use proper adapters to check timing. Do not puncture cables or boots with test probes.
  1. If a magnetic probe timing light is used, refer to equipment manufacturer's instruction for proper hookup. Use a 10 degree offset when required.
  2. Turn off all lights and accessories. Start engine and run until normal operating temperature is obtained. Unplug coolant sensor connector. The "CHECK ENGINE" light must turn on. Do not reconnect sensor or stop and restart engine at this time. Cooling fan should turn on and remain on until engine is turned off.
  3. Aim power timing light at timing marks or read magnetic timing unit. If timing is not to specification, loosen distributor hold-down arm bolt and rotate distributor housing to obtain correct timing. Tighten distributor hold-down bolt when timing is correct.
  4. Recheck timing. Turn engine off. Reconnect coolant sensor and erase fault codes. Start engine and let speed stabilize for one minute. "CHECK ENGINE" light should be off.
WARNING: On the 3.0L V6, the firing order and the spark plug connection order on the top of the distributor do not match. Circuits internal to the distributor cap differ from the external spark plug wire connections. This is intentional and is done to avoid spark plug wires crossover. See Fig 1 .
